Kernersville neighborhood hugged by Interstate 40
As Interstate 40 stretches east of Winston-Salem, it passes by the quiet community of Glenwood/Kingswood. This pastoral yet suburban neighborhood is part of Kernersville, Winston-Salem’s largest suburb that’s been steadily growing since the early 1900s. “Kernersville used to be a farming town,” says Carolyn Esterly, a Realtor with Re/Max Preferred Properties who’s a longtime resident of the area. “It’s built up now, but 30 years ago, it was all farmland.” A few pastures still dot Glenwood/Kingswood today, but the neighborhood is mostly subdivisions with new commercial developments as bookends. “The area offers a small-town feel while sitting right in the heart of the Triad,” says Realtor Dylan King, owner of Arden Realty Group and a decades-long resident of the area. “You’re close enough to commute to Winston-Salem and Greensboro, but the town feels more like its own place than just another suburb.”

Midcentury and modern homes on spacious lots
With development starting in the 1960s, Glenwood/Kingswood features a mix of midcentury and modern-day architecture. Ranch-style homes can be found throughout the neighborhood resting on narrow, unmarked roads. Traditional brick homes from the 1990s and Modern Transitional styles built in the early 2000s fill several subdivisions with wide, sidewalk-lined streets. These houses are often over 2,000 square feet, larger than the national average of 1,930 square feet. Lots are equally as large, typically falling between 1/3 and ¾ acre. Well-kept lawns are adorned with mature shade trees, garden beds and shapely shrubs. Most homes cost between $275,000 and $530,000, but custom builds can start around $575,000 and reach up to $700,000. Some properties come with monthly homeowners association fees of around $30.
