Piney Grove
Peaceful pockets of homes spread over the county
Residential development in Piney Grove started in the 1940s and has been ongoing ever since. Pockets of classic midcentury ranch-style homes peek from sections of 1970s/’80s split-levels and Colonial Revivals. There are also Farmhouse-inspired Modern Transitional homes built in the ‘90s scattered throughout the community, as well as brand-new subdivisions lined with Traditional and Craftsman-inspired homes. Most homes enjoy oversized lots with broad lawns, established trees and multiple-car garages. Prices start at around $275,000 and can climb to more than $425,000.B-rated Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools
Neighborhood kids are served by schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County district, but their exact pathway from kindergarten through high school varies depending on their address. Parents are advised to double-check the boundaries ahead of registration. Many youngsters between preschool and fifth grade go to Piney Grove Elementary. It’s conveniently located off Piney Grove Road near the middle of the neighborhood, within 5 miles of most homes. “People really rally around Piney Grove Elementary School,” says Angelique Smith, local Realtor at High Key Realty and Kernersville resident of 18 years. “The administration and teachers are very caring and personal.” Older students may continue to Kernersville Middle and East Forsyth High; the two schools are farther afield, but both are within 11 miles of the neighborhood. East Forsyth High offers a Finance Academy to students between 10th and 12th grades. In their senior year, Finance Academy students take several courses at Forsyth Technical College, including International Business, Principles of Management Honors, Financial Planning and Business Law. Piney Grove Elementary, Kernersville Middle and East Forsyth High all earn B grades from Niche.
Pine Knolls Golf Club, Cascades Preserve and more nearby
Pine Knolls Golf Club sprawls over the center of the neighborhood. The 18-hole, par 72, public course was built in the ‘60s and has hosted the National Golf Association Triad Classic and the Forsyth County Amateur. “The golf club has been growing a lot, and the course is very well maintained,” Smith says. About 4 miles northeast of the golf course, Cascades Preserve features more than 100 acres of natural landscapes and wildlife habitats. Falling Waters Trail meanders for 2 miles along the creek that burbles through the preserve; the rustic hiking trail is lined with scenic overlooks and sitting areas. Oak Ridge Town Park is minutes away, about 7 miles east of most Piney Grove homes, too. The nearly 80-acre park is packed with walking and mountain biking trails, two playgrounds, lighted sports fields and a catch-and-release fishing pond. There’s also an amphitheater, where locals can catch live music shows on Saturday evenings once a month in the summer. On rainy days, or just to enjoy a more temperature-controlled type of recreation, the family-owned TREX Cinema movie theater is only about 6 miles south of most homes.Surrounded by small-town shopping and dining
For groceries and other everyday essentials, most locals head into one of the three small towns surrounding the neighborhood. Kernersville, the largest of the three, has a Food Lion and several other nationally recognized big box retailers. In Oak Ridge, just a few miles east, there’s a Lowes Foods and a Tractor Supply, too. In the same shopping center as Lowes Foods, Ridge Shrimp & Oyster offers fresh seafood dishes with a Southern twist. Bistro 150, also nearby, features an eclectic menu that blends American, Asian and Mediterranean cuisines. In Walkertown, to the west of Piney Grove, Walkertown Seafood Shack is also popular for its fresh fish fare. And to the south of home, Kernersville is full of popular local eateries, too. Jamie Harrelson, a Kernersville local and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, says that two of her favorites are J. Pepper’s Southern Grille and Don Juan’s Mexican Restaurant.Quick commuting to Kernersville, Winston-Salem and Greensboro
US Route 158 runs along the north end of the community, connecting southwest into Winston-Salem, about 17 miles away. Depending on traffic, the drive can take less than 30 minutes. The drive to Greensboro, about 24 miles southeast, can also take about 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Downtown Kernersville is much closer; the 6-mile drive south down Piney Grove Road typically takes only 10 minutes. Piedmont Triad International Airport is about 14 miles, or 20 minutes, southeast of home. The airport offers direct, nonstop flights to 14 major US cities.Crime
