Quiet, unincorporated living in Cerbat Mountains
Chloride, once a silver mining camp founded in the 1860s, is an unincorporated area 23 miles north of Kingman, Arizona in the Cerbat Mountains. In some ways, the spirit of the Wild West is very much alive in Chloride. “The people here appreciate that there’s no HOA, no city taxes and no one to tell you what you can and can’t do on your property,” says Kathy Kenedy, local business owner and longtime Chloride resident. “Of course, the downside of that is if you do need the police or fire department, it’s going to be a 30-minute wait for them to get here from Kingman.” The community is tiny, with a population of 229 people, according to the 2020 census. “Tourists will come and see the murals painted on the boulders and check out the old mining buildings,” says Kenedy. “But for the most part, people are here for the quiet, slow pace that life has here.”
Manufactured homes with plenty of space
Homes are sparse in Chloride. Properties are scattered throughout the neighborhood instead of concentrated on residential roads. Most properties are either ranch-style houses or manufactured homes sitting off quiet dirt roads costing between $60,000 and $160,000. Lawns don’t exist here – it’s just dirt – and neither do attached garages. Chain link fences surround the perimeter of most properties. “Water gets pumped in from Golden Valley, but a lot of homes here are on septic,” says Kenedy. Residents should clear debris from their properties to avoid wildfires, which are prominent in the area because of Chloride’s extreme heat and arid climate. Chloride sees 8 inches of precipitation per year, and an average high temperature of 98 degrees in the summer.

Off-roading on the Chloride Mines Four-Wheeling Trail
Since Chloride is so sparsely populated, people tend to keep to themselves. But that’s changed over the past few years, says Kenedy. “We’re spread out, but there have been efforts to get the community together more in recent years,” she says. “We’ll have small little parades and community events for holidays.” Chloride Community Park was renovated in 2020 and features new slides and playground equipment. The park also has a covered picnic area, a basketball court and a horseshoe pit. Adventure seekers take on the advanced Chloride Mines four-wheeling trail, an 18-mile trek with a 2,000-foot elevation climb that takes around three hours to complete. Along the way, drivers and passengers will see the Roy Purcell Murals. Purcell was a local who went on a spiritual journey in 1966 and painted a set of murals that span 2,000 square feet on boulders outside of town. The murals, named “The Journey,” attract visitors along the Chloride Mines trail. The murals depict everything from Native American imagery of the town as it may have looked in the 1880's and giant eagle talons swooping over the silver mines.
Chloride Community Park is the only park located directly in Chloride and offers a playground.
Roy Purcell's murals are found deep into the mountains that sit behind Chloride.
