Located on the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border and along the Delaware River, Knowlton Township offers a different lifestyle than what many think is possible in New Jersey – especially when considering the access to urban amenities the area still has. “Realistically, you’re only about 10 minutes from town but it feels so much more private than that,” says Carol Paglia, Realtor with RE/MAX Ridge Real Estate and resident of the area for over 20 years. “My neighbors are the trees, the nature and the deer, and I can even hear the coyotes at night – it’s just very peaceful in a way many people don’t assume New Jersey can be.” With its country atmosphere and slower pace of living, Knowlton Township offers a break from the congestion of more urban areas in favor of a rural and more scenic lifestyle – one that manages to better demonstrate why New Jersey is called “The Garden State.”

Some homes date back as far as the early 1800s and feature loving renovations that lend a unique aesthetic to the structures. Some modern contemporary houses are available as well, along with larger custom homes sitting on dozens of acres. The slower pace of life is reflected in the area’s housing market, too – with homes typically taking longer than average to sell, and stock itself being relatively low. For homebuyers, however, this often leads to good deals. “Beyond just the proximity to the city and all the rural aspects, people can find cheaper homes here, too,” says Christine Bond, Broker with Weichert Realtors. “Taxes are typically a good bit lower as well, so people looking for a more rural lifestyle really have a number of reasons to make the move.” Prices for established ranch styles and split-levels range from $230,000 to $525,000, while renovated Colonial Revivals and custom builds can reach prices as high as $750,000 or more.

Join the ski club at North Warren Regional High School
Students are jointly served by the Knowlton Township and North Warren Regional School Districts. Children may begin at Knowlton Township Elementary, which earns a Niche grade of B-minus, up through the sixth grade. Students can then move on to attend fellow B-minus-rated North Warren Regional High School, which serves grades seventh through 12th. North Warren Regional High is known for its small class sizes – the student to teacher ratio being 12:1 – while also featuring unique extracurriculars, such as the ski club. Because of its rural location, Knowlton Township doesn’t offer public transportation – meaning a car is necessary. On the township’s west side, however, Christopher Colombus Highway is easily accessible and allows for travel from New Jersey into New York, and toward the shore. Route 80 is also nearby, and many residents commute to Hackettstown via this highway.
Fresh groceries directly from the farm
While the rural atmosphere does mean that shopping and dining choices are limited in comparison to more urban places, residents don’t have to travel far to stock up on farm-fresh goods. “We don’t go to the store to buy eggs around here,” says Paglia. “There’s so many farmstands right on the side of the road, outside of folks’ farms, and you can pick up things like beef too.” Fresh fruits and vegetables are available at the weekly Blairstown Farmers’ Market nearby, while other household essentials can be picked up just four miles east at Acme. “Retail shopping is pretty scarce, but other than that, it generally has the things that people want or need,” says Bond. “You’ve got chains like Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks down Simpson Road, along with some really nice local eateries.” The Log Cabin Bar and Grill is a staple in the community with its burgers and pizza, while wine connoisseurs and newbies alike can sip on a glass of chardonnay at Brook Hollow Winery.
Knowlton has a trusting community spirit that is exemplified by roadside honesty produce stands.

Paulinskill Valley Trail offers over 27-miles of trail
