Morningside home to two historic houses
Morningside is a quiet neighborhood just a mile east of downtown Knoxville. “Proximity to downtown makes this an attractive area,” says Chris Cockerille, a realtor since 2005 with FYVE Tennessee, LLC. “Especially for people who want things to do.” The neighborhood may have a growth spurt due to the new Smokies baseball stadium and downtown. Knoxville’s history is preserved in two historic houses, now museums, in Morningside. The welcoming Mabry-Hazen House Museum holds 130 years of Knoxville history, through the occupation of both Union and Confederate soldiers to Evelyn Hazen’s case against Ralph Scharringhaus, who promised to marry her but didn’t follow through. She sued and won. The Beck Cultural Exchange Center, established in 1975, was created in protest of the Urban Renewal projects in the area. The Beck house, now a museum, was used as an Urban Renewal site office. “The area was one of the markets for urban renewal,” says Briana Slanagan, Archivist at the Beck Cultural Exchange Center. “Thankfully, the community was able to stop them from doing too much damage.”
The Mabry Hazen House is on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Sunday Market and Victorian Séance Experience
Each Sunday from June to September, locals head to the Eastside Sunday Market at Dr. Walter Hardy Memorial Park for fresh produce and specialty items. The Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum hosts year-round events and programs, including an annual fall festival. For entertainment closer to home, the Mabry-Hazen House holds a historically accurate Victorian Séance Experience and other historically themed events throughout the year. The Beck Cultural Center organizes an annual Eighth of August Jubilee, which lasts four days and includes a summer concert with line dancing, food, vendors, games and a party on the lawn. Residents visit downtown Knoxville to see a concert, watch a movie or catch a game.
The Beck Cultural Center was established to preserve the history of East TN African Americans.
The Mabry Hazen House was a strategic site for Union and Confederate forces in the Civil War.
