A throwback in more ways than one
Created as a planned suburban neighborhood in the late 1950s, Indian Heights features ranch-style houses and looping streets that fan out from a pair of neighborhood parks. Though the area was well outside Kokomo’s boundaries when it was built, it is now one of the city’s southernmost neighborhoods. Indian Heights remains an active neighborhood in a city where the population has increased by more than 30% since 2010. “People have been flocking to the Kokomo area because the cost of living is so low compared to surrounding counties,” says Cyndi Dieterman, agent with The Key Team. “The city is big enough to have everything, but not so big that it takes two hours to get from one side to the other.”
Indian Heights sits on SR 931 on the southern edge of Kokomo.

A walkable neighborhood built with cars in mind
Cars were king when Indian Heights was built 6 miles south of the city center – especially in Kokomo. To this day, Chrysler has a transmission plant about 3 miles from the neighborhood on the city's southeast side. And though a vehicle is still a near-necessity, the neighborhood has been included on the Kokomo City Trolley Red Line since being incorporated into Kokomo in 2012. "It used to be outside of city limits, but the city annexed some of the outskirt subdivisions," Dieterman says. The looping, sidewalk-lined streets within the neighborhood are friendly for walking or biking. Residents may also expect to hear more motorcycle traffic than the average neighborhood – Harley-Davidson of Kokomo's dealership and repair shop is across the street.
Indian Heights is known for it's circular streets.

Nearby Cone Palace offers indoor and outdoor seating and menu items like burgers, hot dogs and chicken tenders. Gabe's Pizza is another popular local restaurant that anchors Indian Heights Plaza. Grocery options include a Dollar General just outside the neighborhood, Sunspot Natural Market on Reed Road, and a Kroger in the Maple Crest neighborhood.

Easy access to neighborhood parks
There are a pair of neighborhood parks – Mendota Park in the south section of the neighborhood and Mohawk Park in the northern section. Mendota Park has a basketball court, baseball diamond and playground. Mohawk Park features a playground, basketball court, and a large open field. The largest of Kokomo's city parks, 100-acre Jackson Morrow Park, is a short drive away. The park is home to the Kirkendall Interpretive Nature Center, which features exhibits highlighting native Indiana fish, turtle and reptile species. Morrow Park also has trails, a skatepark, sand volleyball courts and a regulation basketball court.

There's noticeable uniformity in the community's housing. The Lusk Corporation developed the neighborhood—and many similar neighborhoods throughout the country—in the '50s. Homes feature a mix of attached and unattached garages, carports and driveways. Houses sell between $65,000 and $175,000, with many purchased by investors as rental properties.

Taylor Community schools serve neighborhood
Though the community is now part of Kokomo proper, students in Indian Heights still attend the predominantly rural Taylor Community School Corporation (TCSC), which has the lowest enrollment among public schools in Howard County. Despite small numbers, TCSC ranks 30th in the entire state for diversity. Taylor Elementary School is in the middle of the neighborhood and is walkable for neighborhood families. Students move on to Taylor Middle School. Both schools have a C-rating on Niche. They conclude their careers at Taylor High School.
