Maple Crest
Neighborhood in Kokomo, Indiana
Howard County 46902
Mid-century homes shaded by mature trees
Ranches are the predominant housing style in Maple Crest, but they do not stand alone. There are also a handful of bungalows, split-level and two-story houses in mid-century styles. "They're all about the same age," Goodnight says. Most neighborhood yards feature mature trees, though in some cases younger trees have been planted where taller ones once stood. Recent Maple Crest home prices range between $100,000-265,000, and several houses bordering Kokomo Country Club are valued above $300,000.
A beloved park and the world's largest steer
Of all the things Maple Crest is close to, perhaps none is as beloved as Highland Park. The 83-acre park is home to two of Kokomo's oddest and most popular attractions: the taxidermized remains of Old Ben, who set a record as the world's largest steer in 1906, and the remnants of a gigantic sycamore stump estimated to predate Indiana's statehood by some 700 years. More traditional park features include a large playground with accessible equipment, Little League baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, a disc golf course, and picnic areas. The neighborhood is also adjacent to the private Kokomo Country Club, which opened for play in 1904. The public American Legion Golf Course is on the opposite side of the IUK campus from Maple Crest.
Middle school another neighborhood asset
Maple Crest is home to one of the three middle schools in the Kokomo-Center Township School Corporation: Maple Crest Middle School. It has a STEM focus and serves the entire southern half of Kokomo. Maple Crest receives a C-rating on Niche. Grade school students attend Boulevard Elementary, which also has a C-rating. Boulevard is a literal football field away from Kokomo High School, which serves the entire city and has a C-plus rating. Indiana University-Kokomo's campus is also right across the street from Maple Crest, but the neighborhood has no student housing.Year-round events at Highland Park
No matter the season, there's something to do at Highland Park. The Kokomo Park Band holds weekly symphonic concerts on Wednesday nights in June and July and a season finale on Labor Day weekend. There are also kid-friendly activities all summer, including a craft fest and a daily recreation adventure program. In December, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, featuring one of the city's largest light displays. Several of Kokomo's most popular sled hills are also in the park.
Easy to get to anywhere in Kokomo
"In Kokomo, you can get anywhere in 15 minutes," Goodnight says. But from Maple Crest, residents can get where they need to be even quicker. Kokomo High is 1 mile west. Downtown Kokomo is 2.5 miles north, and the Chrysler transmission plant that employs hundreds of Kokomo residents is 2 miles east. The Community Howard Regional Health Hospital is about 1 mile southeast of Maple Crest. On weekdays, public transportation is available on the Kokomo City Trolley Orange Line, which runs along Maple Crest's boundary streets.Close to top Kokomo shopping and dining selections
Yoke Social Table, located just outside the neighborhood, is one of Kokomo's freshest restaurants in more ways than one. Opened after the pandemic in hopes of bringing people together, it's called a "social table" for good reason. People are invited to bring friends or make new ones over power bowls, salads or sandwiches on fresh ciabatta rolls, among other items. "Our motto is 'Changing communities one bite at a time,'" says front-of-house manager Hope Brothers. "We're trying to get people eating healthier. Everything is fresh and locally sourced to help our local farmers. People leave happier than when they came." Other area favorites include Country Squire Carry Out Chicken and PASTAriffic Italian Restaurant. Maplecrest Plaza is home to several stores, including a Kroger, the only chain supermarket on Kokomo's south side.
