Bluffside is filled with recreation and community spirit near downtown
Bluffside is on the western side of Wisconsin, an area geographically distinct for its prairies, bluffs and deep ravines called coulees. It's one of the most popular neighborhoods in the area because it is at the base of the bluffs, with easy access to forested trails leading to Grandad Bluff, the highest point in La Crosse County. "There's an 18-hole golf course [in the neighborhood] as well," says William Favre of Favre & Co. @properties La Crosse, who is in his 20th year as a Realtor. Located in La Crosse, a city on the edge of the Mississippi River, local anglers and boaters also have a place to play. Neighbors meet at the pubs in and around Bluffside, and it's just a short drive to a historic downtown setting. "It's definitely a family here [in Bluffside] more than anything," says Annie Weigel, the co-owner of Bluffside Tavern, the oldest bar in La Crosse.
Tennis, golf, hiking and fishing close to home
Bluffview Park and the public Forest Hills Golf Course are in Bluffside. The former has a playground, tennis courts and a baseball field. The latter is historic, as the first game recorded at the course was over 120 years ago. "The main park would be Myrick Park," Favre says, adding that hikers and bikers are drawn to its trails connecting to Hixon Forest. Hixon Forest alone has over 30 miles of multi-use trails traversing the bluffs and connects to Grandad Bluff, poised at an over 1,100-foot elevation for a view of the entire town. The Mississippi serves local boaters and anglers. Riverside Park is around two and a half miles west along the river and hosts city celebrations, including Oktoberfest. Chad Erikson Memorial Ice Rink is part of Riverside Park and a go-to in the winter.
Bluffside's vintage homes and passing trains
Colonial Revival, mid-century modern and minimal traditional details express themselves through ranch styles, split levels, traditional two-story homes and cottages in Bluffside. Many are older, with a median build year of 1955. Prices range from $180,000 to $434,000 for small to modest homes. As homes get larger and closer to the bluffs, ranges rise to around $490,000 to $870,000. Lots are spacious and sometimes capped by sidewalks. Many have enormous pines and oaks growing from them, mirroring the verdancy of the forested bluffs. An active railway runs through the neighborhood, creating regular traffic sounds.
Home to an iconic tavern, near diverse shopping and dining
Bluffside Tavern was initially founded in the mid-1800s to serve quarry workers at the base of Grandad Bluff. The pub survived the end of the city's quarrying days and prohibition to become an iconic neighborhood spot. "Generations of families have come here, and their children and they carry on the legacy," Weigel says. Beyond booze, Bluffside Tavern serves Mama K's Pizza, handmade in La Crosse. More casual eateries, Festival Foods for groceries, are just outside the neighborhood, while downtown La Crosse is just over 2 miles away. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, downtown captures a bygone era along the Mississippi, with over 100 locally owned stores and restaurants built within vintage brick buildings.
Universities and schools meeting different faiths in La Crosse
The La Crosse School District serves area students and participates in school choice, allowing students to attend different facilities within the district. Many begin at Emerson Elementary School, which earns a B-rating on Niche. Logan Middle School was the next step, but it closed in 2023. Students may now attend the C-plus-rated Logan Middle School or the B-minus-rated Longfellow Middle School. Logan High School, which has an apprenticeship program that introduces students to real-world skills, earns a B. The unrated Blessed Sacrament School offers a private catholic school option right outside the neighborhood. Faith in various forms, from churches to synagogues to Buddhist centers and Mosques, is evident across the city.
Main roads for getting around
Wisconsin State Route 33 and Losey Boulevard North span the neighborhood’s southern and western edges. Losey Boulevard North flows seamlessly into highway 16 as it travels north. Bus stops through Municipal Transit provide commuter options in Bluffside.
La Crosse's flood risk
La Crosse poses a flood risk. The last major incidences were in 2019, 2001 and 2024. In 2019, the Mississippi River's crest was at flood levels for more than 40 days.
