Hintgen offers both calm streets and convenience close to La Crosse
Hintgen is a small neighborhood in southern La Crosse, located near schools, shopping strips and recreational outlets. Being along a main highway in the city, the community offers quick access to downtown businesses and employers, while remaining quiet and residential due to a convenient geographical perk. An active train track borders the neighborhood to the north and east, creating many cul-de-sac streets and a traffic-free atmosphere. With proximity to everyday needs and relaxed roads, Hintgen is where those seeking both convenience and calmness settle down.
Modest homes line the area’s traffic-free streets
Small ranch-style homes and Cape Cods make up the neighborhood, sitting on narrow lots along gridded streets. Only some homes have sidewalks out front, but the traffic-free streets are popular for evening walkers and kids riding bikes. Skinny driveways lead to attached or detached garages, and yards are speckled with tall trees. Most homes sell for $200,000 to $340,00, with a median price just slightly below the La Crosse-Onalaska Metro area median. Colonial Revival and raised-ranch-style homes in the area, though rare, sell between $300,000 and $390,000. Homes in Hintgen sell very quickly, lasting less than two weeks on the market, on average.
Public schools are within a short drive or walk for students
The community gets its name from Hintgen Elementary School, located at the neighborhood's southern end. The school is less than a mile from each of the area's homes, and students can walk to class in under 15 minutes without crossing any through streets. Hintgen is rated C-plus by Niche and feeds into B-minus-rated Longfellow Middle School, about 2 miles north. Central High School is also close and earns a B from Niche. The high school offers Career & Choice Education, a program that fosters critical thinking, leadership and career development through 16 different pathways. Popular focuses include education, health sciences, information technology and business. Wisconsin has state-wide open enrollment, and students can apply to any school of their choosing.
Highland Park and other green spaces for family fun
Highland Park is a small, "natural" park in the neighborhood, with slides, swings and balance beams built into the land. For playing pick-up basketball or baseball, residents head to the space behind Hintgen Elementary School. More parks in the surrounding communities include Erickson Park, which has tennis courts, softball diamonds and a public pool, and Chad Erickson Memorial Park, featuring a fishing pond and paved trails for walking and biking.
Everyday essentials and grocery stores are minutes away
Retail and dining are at Hintgen's fingertips, with plazas along Purple Heart Memorial Highway. Fast-food chains, coffee shops, a hardware store, Dollar Tree and Aldi are right across the busy road from the neighborhood, and Walmart Supercenter is less than a mile south. Hungry Peddler is an American restaurant further north on the same road, which has been serving the community sandwiches, burgers and steak dinners since 1976.
Easy access to downtown La Crosse via U.S. Route 14
Purple Heart Memorial Highway, or U.S. Route 14, heads right into Downtown La Crosse, 4 miles away. Municipal Transit Utility (MTU) buses stop along 28th Street, Losey Boulevard and Hass Street in the neighborhood. Still, most residents rely on personal cars for commuting and running errands. Gunderson Hospital and Mayo Clinic Health System – La Crosse are two hospitals and prominent employers within 3 miles of Hintgen, and La Crosse Regional Airport is approximately 10 miles away. The small airport flies only to Chicago, Orlando and Phoenix.
Popular city festivals and events residents enjoy year-round
Being so close to downtown, Hintgen residents enjoy the city's events and festivals. Farmers markets, free concerts and food festivals occur throughout the year, and week-long festivities draw huge crowds from the county and across the Mississippi River in Minnesota. Oktoberfest USA is one of the largest and oldest Oktoberfests in the Midwest, attracting about 150,000 visitors – three times the city's population. Other well-attended festivals include Celebrate Onalaska, Explore La Crosse Day and the Between the Bluffs Beer, Wine & Cheese Festival.
