Lower Northside is a convenient part of town along the Black River

Located along the Black River, Lower Northside is convenient to shopping, dining and recreation signature of La Crosse while having its own local charms. "It's easy access if you want to do a day trip to bigger cities or for more shopping. But you have your needs met here and you're not overwhelmed with the congestion," says Realtor Karla Frank, a longtime resident who works for Bi-State Realty & Appraisals. She describes the community as a big family that bonds over comfort food, sports, fishing and boating along the Black River. Locals are also just a short drive from La Crosse's trails and scenic bluffs.

Older homes in Northside than in Southside

Tall oaks billow over the community's narrow sidewalks, connecting relatively small yards on gridded streets. The city's bluffs rise in the distance. "The north side of La Crosse has the older neighborhoods compared to the south side," Frank says. "There are investment properties around, but even so, they don't disrupt the neighborhood." Minimal traditional styles are common, but Queen Annes, Tudor Revivals and American Foursquares still have a foothold. Prices range from $79,000 to $119,000 for investment properties and small homes, while larger and more updated options go for $135,000 to $329,000. The neighborhood's modest selection of condos sells for around $151,000 to $250,000.

Spots to hang out by the river, watch a ball game and bring the kids

Copeland Park is a centerpiece for recreation and particularly popular on game days when local collegiate baseball and softball teams play. Tennis courts and a playground offer everyday fun while the park's splash pad and outdoor ice-skating rink ramp up when the seasons change. Goose Green Park gives local kids a place to crack the bat. Veterans Freedom Park and Black River Beach are over a mile away. Both have boat ramps and fishing areas, but Veterans Freedom Park has a marina. Myrick Park is one of the most popular in the city, just over 2 miles away, with a dog park and trails feeding into Hixon Forest. The forest's trail network connects to a public golf course and Grandad Bluff, the highest peak in the city.

All of La Crosse is at risk of flooding. The last major floods were in 2001, 2019 and 2024. In 2019, the duration of the flood was significant, as the Mississippi River’s water levels remained above 12 feet for more than 40 days.

The train, buses and highways get commuters where they need to be

An Amtrak station settles in Lower Northside and trains pass through the neighborhood daily. "We're probably talking at least five or six times a day. And we do have the La Crosse Regional Airport on French Island, which is considered Northside. So, there is some airplane traffic also," Frank says. Wisconsin Highway 35 and U.S. Route 53 flow through the community and bus stops dot the area.

Big-box stores and larger retailers found nearby

Most restaurants and shops are clustered around the highways. Marge's On Rose is a popular pitstop for its classic Americana menu. Ardie's Flipside Pub & Grill has daily specials, including fish fries and chicken at the end of the week. Damn Tasty whips up globally inspired comfort food, including mushroom shawarma and banh mi burgers. Festival Foods is over a mile away for groceries, and Kane Street Community Garden provides free homegrown produce on select weekdays during the summer. "As far as box stores in La Crosse go, they are just not [as prevalent] anymore. It's smaller independent stores," Frank says. "The target is still there. Walmart. The grocery stores. But most of them are in Onalaska." Locally, there's a mix of bridal, appliance, pet supply and sports stores. Downtown La Crosse has a more robust selection, around 2 miles from Lower Northside.
