Powell Poage Hamilton
Historic architecture with active restoration efforts
Aside from some modern townhomes and apartments, new construction in Powell Poage Hamilton is rare. Much of the neighborhood's personality comes from the vintage, sometimes historic homes that line the quiet streets. The diversity of architecture only adds another layer of intrigue, with the community having everything from stucco-sided bungalows to Victorians and Colonial Revivals. "Most of our older homes were built at the turn of the century when it was an old lumber town," Stacey says. "The historic homes absolutely have a turnover rate; people are actively buying them, and each time they do, there's more effort put into restoration." The typical selling range in Powell Poage Hamilton is between $120,000 and $300,000, depending on how much renovation has been put into a particular house and its square footage.Downtown La Crosse's unique, privately owned businesses
Being only a mile from downtown La Crosse, Powell Poage Hamilton is close to some of the city's most popular local restaurants and specialty shops. "Whenever I go to other cities, I notice that even their downtown areas usually have at least a few franchises," Stacey says. "That's really not the case for us. Everything in downtown is privately owned and operated." Residents pack into Houghton's Jackson Street Pub for hearty Irish meals and head out for upscale dining with river views at The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern. The closest retail area to the neighborhood is 3 miles south off Mormon Coulee Road, featuring stores such as Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and Walgreens.Enjoy live music and fireworks at Riverfest

On the third floor of Central High, a planetarium is open for other schools in the district to come with visiting classes and for the public upon booking. On the neighborhood's northside is the pocket green space of Powell Park, which offers open grassy areas, a playground, basketball courts and a softball diamond. "You're maybe 10 or 15 minutes from Granddad Bluff; it's basically a small mountain. There are a ton of hiking trails, and mountain biking is a huge thing here," Stacey says. Just south of Powell Poage Hamilton, off 7th Street, the Green Island Ice Arena welcomes local hockey leagues and offers open skate hours. Outside the arena are the Green Island Tennis Courts, which are accessible to the public. The 7th Street Boat Launch can be used by anyone with a permit who wants access to the Mississippi River.Convenient access to highways, public transit and health care
