Charming Chicago suburb with access to amenities and a variety of entertainment options
La Grange Park started with a house party. In the late 1890s, Pete Swanson wanted to supplement his income with a side gig — so he decided to run a speakeasy out of his home. The hangout became so popular and rowdy that a government was assembled in response. La Grange Park became official on July 14, 1892. Today, it’s a thriving suburb with an abundance of leisure and entertainment options. Once inhabited by only 300 people, La Grange Park now boasts a population of 13,000. Major thoroughfares like Route 45 intersect the community, giving residents quick access to basic amenities like banks, grocery stores and hospitals. Neat, orderly streets are laid out like a grid, filled with homes that exude vintage charm. “There’s a lot of impressive masonry around here,” Bryan Bomba, a Broker with the Bryan Bomba Group of @Properties says. “These are good quality homes.”

From ranch styles and split levels to larger colonial builds
Ranch-style homes are commonly seen, as are bi-levels and split-levels. These often feature tan brick facades — a quintessential colorway for midcentury modern builds. Depending on the level of interior renovations completed, prices can range from $130,000 to $880,000. Some of those updates can give a more contemporary style to older housing stock. “Lots of stark white, ceiling-to-floor windows, open staircases, minimal interior walls,” Bomba says. La Grange Park also boasts a collection of larger colonial builds. These homes, with usually north of 2,500 square feet of interior space, sell for between $700,000 and $1.2 million. Overall, the median home price in La Grange Park is $415,000. Streets feature tree-covered sidewalks, while yards are usually well-landscaped.

Salt Creek Woods Nature Preserve
One of the most distinguishing features of La Grange Park is how much of it is devoted to nature preserves. “People here like being close to the woods,” Bomba says. “There’s a neighborhood called Harding Woods, highly desirable, surrounded by the woods of course but you can walk to downtown La Grange.” The Salt Creek Woods Nature Preserve is an impressive 250-acre expanse taking visitors on trails through prairie, marsh, meadow and woodland ecosystems. This is an excellent place to encounter wildlife. In the wetland areas, people hear the chorus of frogs, while in the cavities of trees they can catch woodpeckers building a nest. Although they’re not likely to see them, it can be enchanting to know that southern flying squirrels glide through the canopy of oak-hickory forest at night. Adjoining the preserve is Bemis Woods, another green escape. “Bemis Woods has a path that leads to Brookfield Zoo, and there’s actually a zipline course in there, too,” Bomba says.

Explore the La Grange Antique Mall
When residents want to shop and dine, they head to 31st Street, where they can wander the 6,000 square feet of space in the La Grange Park Antique Mall and rustle up that perfect find from the past. Afterward, they can walk across the street, sit back and relax at Posto 31, an Italian restaurant with a sleek, almost industrial vibe. Traditional dishes are updated with progressive flair, such as classic spicy arrabbiata tomato sauce – this time served over squid ink linguine. Even the desserts are tastefully experimental – customers can try the chocolate custard sprinkled with cocoa pebbles. With a nod to the community's speakeasy past, the Hop District Community Brewing Company is a place to meet friends and be merry. The beers poke fun at local trivia, such as the Permission to Whisper lager, which references a rule from La Grange Park’s first school: “There is no whispering without permission.” For those looking to make a meal at home, there is a Jewel-Osco located in town.
