La Vergne’s leaders are certain their city got its name from a prominent Frenchman laid to rest here in the mid-19th century. However, many long-time residents say that their city's name comes from the French words for “The Green” — a descriptor reflecting Tennessee's seasonality and the city's transformation from dull winter hues to the spring's lush green.
Located between Nashville and Murfreesboro, La Vergne draws those seeking the comforts of a suburban community within reasonable distance of big city attractions. Additionally, La Vergne sits close to industry and one of the Nashville metro area’s outdoor gems: Percy Priest Lake. “The main thing about La Vergne is its proximity to Nashville,” says Kent Patterson, a Realtor with Southern Life Real Estate, whose daughter lives in La Vergne. “You can be in Nashville in 20 minutes and the affordability is there for people who want to get close to Nashville. And it’s a good location from Murfreesboro too.”
La Vergne is located about 20 miles South East of Downtown Nashville.

Neighborhoods with ‘good opportunities’ for first-time buyers
La Vergne features a mix of neighborhoods. Part of the city has ranch-style houses on spacious lots shaded by mature trees, while other areas are comprised of dense developments featuring contemporary Traditional designs. The rest of the city's neighborhoods are primarily townhouses.
The city has a median listing price of around $385,000, which is $140,000 below Nashville’s median and also slightly below the national median. Homes here feature footprints ranging from 1,000 square feet to just over 2,500 square feet. Depending on size, single-family houses will cost between $340,000 to $520,000 and townhouses will mainly cost between $200,000 and $300,000. “For the location, there are good opportunities for first-time homebuyers. That’s what La Vergne draws,” Patterson says.

Groceries and Southeast Asian cuisine along Murfreesboro Road
City staples here include Sir Pizza, where patrons enjoy a variety of thin-crust pies in a setting with vintage sports decor. “It’s really good,” quips Patterson, who counts the restaurant among his favorites. More options exist nearby at the Chon Thong Thai cafe and the Maemax Market LaVergne. Maemax serves Filipino fare but also has a small grocery store section. Kroger is one of the area's main grocery store options.
Otherwise, residents here usually take Sam Ridley Parkway to reach a wider variety of dining options. Although it's located just inside Smyrna, many view the parkway as the border between La Vergne and this neighboring suburb. “Most people, if they’re dining out, they drive 10 minutes down the road to Smyrna and Smyrna has all the big chain restaurants and a movie theater,” Patterson says, adding that he often meets his daughter in Smyrna for lunch. “They really run together quite a bit, and you have your Panera, your Starbucks.”

On the shores of Percy Priest Lake
La Vergne also sits right on the shores of Percy Priest Lake. Surrounded by woods, the lake is 42 miles long and spans 14,000 acres, which means it has plenty of visitors year-round. Everyone from hikers and campers, to boaters and anglers, can enjoy Percy Priest Lake and some of the lake's more popular spots include the Poole Knobs Campground.
Within La Vergne, there are also five parks and one dog park. Veterans Memorial Park is a community meetup spot that's fully equipped with baseball fields, basketball courts and a small skatepark. The park’s playground also includes a large jungle gym.

Community celebrations at Veterans Memorial Park
The city puts on about a dozen community events annually and several take place at Veterans Memorial Park. Festivities include the annual July 4th Celebration, which features live music and a variety of food vendors, and the Howl at the Moon 5k held each August. In early December, the park is the final stop for the annual Parade of Lights, culminating in a tree lighting ceremony and a fireworks display. The park also hosts the Winter Festival on the same day, where families and their little ones can take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

A highly rated school district with strong athletics
The Rutherford County Schools district serves the city and earns an overall A-minus grade from the ratings site Niche. The district, which Niche ranks among the 15 best in the state, oversees seven schools in the city. Niche also ranks the district among the 10 best schools in the state for athletes: not surprisingly, LaVergne High School’s swim teams have won division titles, or finished as runner-ups, many times over the past several years.
Nearby, the Motlow State Community College’s Smyrna campus is an option for those pursuing higher education and LaVergne High students can earn dual enrollment credits, or ultimately, an associate’s degree at the community college.
La Vergne Lake Elementary School enrolls almost 900 students every year.

Bridgestone plant and future mixed-use projects
Major employers here include global tire giant Bridgestone Americas, which employs more than 1,000 people at its La Vergne plant, as well as several diverse trucking facilities and warehouse spaces.
Various development projects are underway in La Vergne and the Rutherford County communities, with the idea of creating mixed-use spaces that include apartments, grocery stores, shops and restaurants. “They’re working on rejuvenating the area to make it a more livable area,” says Brad Hopkins, an agent with Exit Realty Bob Lamb & Associates, who specializes on selling on this side of the Nashville metro.
Most of LaVergne’s growth has occurred during the last two decades, with the latest U.S. Census estimates showing the city's population at approximately 39,600, a 21% increase from 2010.
Although most residents here are car-dependent, Nashville’s WeGo Public Transit system also runs a bus route to and from La Vergne and neighboring Smyrna. Commuters take Interstate 24 to travel to Nashville, about 20 miles north and the interstate also goes to Murfreesboro, which is about 20 miles south. The city is close to the Smyrna Airport, but the facility is mainly used for general aviation and military uses. The Nashville International Airport, about 17 miles from the city, is the region’s hub for commercial flights.

As part of Middle Tennessee, La Vergne enjoys four true seasons, with notably warm, humid summers and mild winters. Extreme weather events like tornadoes typically occur in the spring and late fall — and Middle Tennessee is the state’s most tornado-prone region.
La Vergne enjoys lower crime rates than both Nashville and Tennessee. The latest and most complete FBI data show Nashville’s violent and property crime rates are more than double those of La Vergne’s. However, following a brief slump, property crimes in the city have steadily increased since 2022. Property crimes in 2023 were up 40% from the previous year.
