Outdoor concerts, nature preserves and carnival fun
Situated on the university’s grounds, St. Martin’s Park serves as a practice facility for the SMU Saints sports teams and hosts the Lacey Spring Fun Fair in May. “The fair is a huge community tradition,” says Jeannette Sieler, area resident and Recreation Supervisor with the City of Lacey Parks and Recreation. “It has been a part of the community for almost four decades, lasting two days and remaining free and open to the public. Attendees can enjoy carnival rides, two entertainment stages and live performances by students. The event also includes a car show and a STEM fair.On a typical day, visitors can relax on the grass for a picnic, take leisurely walks or unwind on resting benches while enjoying nature at Huntamer Park. In July, lawn chairs line the grass as the park transforms into an outdoor music venue for the Lacey in Tune summer concert series featuring local acts. Other green spaces hosting events include Lacey Depot Park, home to the Night Market at the Depot series from April through October and Wonderwood Park, which hosts the Earth Day Work Party in spring.
“There’s always something happening, and residents eagerly anticipate these events. We aim to foster a thriving community and bring people together,” Sieler says. Chambers Lake Trailhead Park has wetlands and forested areas for hiking, biking and running. Similarly, Lake Lois Habitat Reserve spans nearly 30 acres, with looped trails, lake-view benches and opportunities for wildlife watching, including waterfowl, bald eagles and otters.
