The south Lacey neighborhood of Horizons offers residents a suburban setting with easy access to both shopping and outdoor spaces. The neighborhood is known for its relatively new developments, which are designed to emphasize convenience with their proximity to shopping, dining and recreational opportunities. “The neighborhood can feel a little removed, but it's actually a pretty short drive to downtown Olympia or central Lacey,” says Realtor and Olympia native Justin Clement with Better Homes and Gardens. “Plus, the area has its own little shopping area, so you don’t have to leave the neighborhood for groceries or everyday stuff.”

Horizons is primarily composed of contemporary single-family homes built within the last three decades. These homes generally feature modern layouts with two-story floor plans and attached garages. The architectural style leans towards contemporary suburban, though many designs incorporate classic Pacific Northwest and Craftsman influences. Most residential streets in the neighborhood have sidewalks, and many feature bike lanes — neither of which is a given in the greater Olympia area. Houses in Horizons typically range in price from the about $450,000 to around $600,000, depending on the size and specific location within the neighborhood.

Shopping at College and Yelm

Local shopping and dining is centered around the intersection of Yelm Highway and College Street on the south side of the neighborhood. The intersection is home to supermarkets Safeway and QFC, a Lowe’s, and an array of smaller chain shops. There are also plenty of chain and local restaurants, including longstanding Japanese eatery Souru Teriyaki and golf club-adjacent gastropub Firecreek Ale House. Additional shopping can be found a couple of miles north of the neighborhood in central Lacey, while downtown Olympia is about 6 to 7 miles away via Yelm Highway.

Rainier Vista Community Park's skate park and playgrounds

Several local parks dot the Horizons neighborhood, providing residents with ample opportunities to get outside. Rainier Vista Community Park is one of the most popular spots, offering large open fields, modern playgrounds, athletic courts and Lacey’s only skate park. Wonderwood Park on the north side of the neighborhood has a more woodsy ambiance, with its old-growth pine trees and shaded walking trails. A more manicured outdoor experience can be had at Capitol City Golf Club on the south end of the neighborhood. The public course features 18 holes and a slightly more relaxed feel than the Indian Summer Golf & Country Club, which sits less than two miles down the road, just west of Horizons.

Timberline High's many clubs

Public schools in the neighborhood are run by the North Thurston School District, which has a B-plus rating on Niche. Chambers Prairie Elementary has a B rating, as does Komachin Middle School. Centennial Amtrak Station

College Street and Yelm Highway are the major thoroughfares in the neighborhood. College runs north to south and connects to central Lacey and Interstate 5, while Yelm Highway runs east to west to Olympia and Tumwater. It’s about 15 miles by car to Joint Base Lewis-McChord and a little over 6 miles to the Washington State Capitol Campus, two of the largest employers in the area. Located just southeast of the neighborhood, Centennial Amtrak Station is the only train station in the greater Olympia region, offering direct connections to Tacoma, Seattle and Portland.
