Almost-rural suburban community in north Lacey
Located on the north side of Lacey, and directly south of the farms and forests that surround Henderson Inlet, Pleasant Glade is a suburban neighborhood that feels almost rural. The mostly residential community has been developed in waves since the 1960s and offers residents easy access to Interstate 5, which borders it to the south and connects the neighborhood to the greater Olympia area. “It’s more of an established neighborhood than you’ll find to the east in Hawks Prairie,” says real estate agent and longtime Lacey resident Laura Lundin of Abbey Realty. “It feels kind of woodsy, but it's actually really close to all the major retail areas in the area.”

Modern developments and midcentury ranches from the '60s
The first major residential developments in the neighborhood were built in the 1960s, with additional subdivisions springing up sporadically over the decades. Consequently, Pleasant Glade’s housing stock is more diverse than many other parts of Lacey. Contemporary two-story Craftsman-style homes in modern subdivisions make up an ever-increasing fraction of the local housing stock, but midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels are common on the north and east sides of the neighborhood. There are also manufactured homes at the Alonda Villa development in the center of the neighborhood. The neighborhood’s established feel is visible in the mature trees and careful landscaping found throughout the community, which give it more of a settled look than many neighborhoods in south Lacey. Most single-family homes in the neighborhood sell for between $450,000 and $650,000, while manufactured units generally go for $100,000 to $200,000.

Sleater-Kinney retail
While Pleasant Glade itself is wholly residential, it’s located just north of Lacey’s largest commercial district, which centers around the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Sleater-Kinney Road (the namesake of famed Olympia rock band Sleater-Kinney). This means most Pleasant Glade residents are within a 1- to 2-mile drive of over a dozen big box stores, multiple supermarkets — including Fred Meyer and Albertsons — and a wide array of smaller shops and restaurants. “You’re right next to tons of shopping, the hospital is right there and Olympia is just down the road,” says Realtor Matt Murray of Van Dorm Realty, who has lived in the area for over 25 years. “It’s definitely one of the most convenient locations in the area in that sense. But even though it’s close to everything, the neighborhood is off the main roads, so you don’t really see problems with traffic.” Dining options include some of the most popular eateries in Lacey, including beloved Italian joint Dirty Dave’s Pizza Parlor, known for its ultra-deep dish 3D pizza. The neighborhood is also right next to Providence St. Peter Hospital, one of the largest medical centers in the Greater Olympia area.

The 22-mile rail trail runs from Woodard Bay Conservation Area to the north down to the city of Rainier to the south, passing along some of the prettiest landscapes in the area on the way. Dedicated park space in the neighborhood is limited to Pleasant Glade Park, somewhat out of the way on the north side of the neighborhood, which features a few unpaved trails through 40 acres of woods and fields.

Nearby Olympia festivals
Pleasant Glade itself doesn't have much in the way of local community events, apart from North Thurston High basketball and football games. However, the neighborhood is just a few miles from downtown Olympia, which hosts a number of major festivals throughout the year, including the Capitol Lakefair in July and Olympia Harbor Days on Labor Day Weekend, which draw thousands of visitors from all over the Pacific Northwest.
Easy commute to Olympia and Lewis-McChord
Interstate 5 passes just south of the neighborhood, offering easy commuting to Olympia and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. It’s less than 4 miles by car to downtown Olympia and the state capitol campus, while JBLM is 15 miles away via the I-5. Bus service in the neighborhood is somewhat limited, though there are stops along nearby Lily Road and Martin Way. Cycling is also a popular way of getting around the neighborhood, thanks in large part to the proximity of the Chehalis Western Trail.
