An Alabama farming community with local history

The capital "f" in LaFayette, Alabama, was influenced by a local newspaper editor from the 1800s. The editor created a fictional character who mispronounced the town as "La Fait." This inspired residents to change the town's name, although outsiders sometimes spell it as La Fayette. Today, the rural area's most notable landmarks are on the downtown square, including the Chambers County Courthouse and a statue of Joe Louis, a LaFayette native and former world heavyweight boxing champion. Beyond the heart of LaFayette are private farms and industrial properties, such as sawmills and the Chambers County Solar PV Park.

Buying a home in LaFayette

Much of LaFayette is agricultural lands and forests, with residential streets branching from the main highways. The area contains farmhouses in addition to cottages and ranch-style homes. Around downtown, there are some historic, early 20th-century properties. These homes often often have raised foundations that sit atop a slightly hilly landscape. Some properties have space for barns and workshops. Most move-in-ready residences cost between $130,000 and about $310,000. The community also has a number of fixer-uppers and homes needing major renovations; these can list between $40,000 and $85,000. The county has a history of hurricanes, tropical storms and tornadoes. These intense weather systems lead to high winds, which can damage properties.

Retail and dining options in downtown and off U.S. 431

Most storefronts and restaurants are along U.S. 431 or inside LaFayette proper. Residents pick up groceries at Piggly Wiggly and the local, family-owned Renfroe's Market. Monte Alban 3 is a community favorite offering happy hour margaritas and comforting Mexican entrées. Zek's 37 is a newcomer to the dining scene; the downtown establishment serves coffee and tea alongside Detroit-style pizza. The organization, LaFayette Main Street, hosts several events that draw residents to downtown. The Food Truck Festival runs a few times a year. Beyond the community's center are industrial sites and agriculture. The Oaks Farm offers a pumpkin patch, and Dempsey Farms allows seasonal strawberry picking.

Visits to the city park and the Chambers County Public Fishing Lake

Construction for the city of LaFayette Eastside Park began in 2018. Today, it is the area's main green space with a playground and an athletic field. There is also a dedicated area for festivals that includes an outdoor amphitheater. Residents are close to regional parks like Chambers County Public Fishing Lake. Visitors can catch bass, catfish and crappie in the 183-acre lake. Chambers County Agricultural Arena is a hot spot for rodeos and equestrian shows. Penton Raceway hosts weekly events from spring until the end of summer.

Driving to local churches, the regional center and Georgia

The area is home to more than 10 places of worship. First United Methodist Church is a part of the Alabama Register of Landmarks & Heritage. U.S. 431, also known as LaFayette Street, runs north and south. The Alabama Department of Transportation plans to add more truck passing lanes along portions of the highway nearby. Locals also travel on State Route 77 and Veterans Memorial Parkway. Auburn is about 25 miles south. Drivers reach the nearest hospital, EAMC-Lanier, and the Alabama-Georgia border in roughly 15 miles.

Learning in town and LaFayette High homecoming

LaFayette Eastside Elementary and John P. Powell Middle have C ratings on Niche. LaFayette High receives a C-plus. During homecoming week, the school's alumni gather for events. The county has plans to combine the school with Valley High to form a consolidated campus. Families can request transfers to other schools on the district's website.
