Durham's industrial origins and pastoral present
Durham sits in a valley between the ridges of northwest Georgia. About 15 miles south of Chattanooga and not far from the Georgia-Tennessee-Alabama state lines, the Georgia community is named for a coal mining company that occupied the area until the middle of the 20th century. Today, it is known more for its natural splendor than its industrial past. “There’s a lot of old family land,” says Robyn Talbot, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Pryor Realty. “They have the ability to have farm animals. A lot of people want to have chickens or some other animals down that way.” Locals enjoy Durham's open space and privacy while still being within convenient driving distance of the city. The community also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.
Trails and natural areas thanks to the Lula Lake Land Trust
Durham and its parks are a natural escape from Chattanooga. Residents and visitors to the area enjoy plenty of hiking, biking and camping. The Lula Lake Land Trust has helped preserve 12,000 acres of land around Rock Creek. Its trails connect to Cloudland Canyon State Park, which has waterfalls, canyons and views of Lookout Mountain. The park also has cavern tours, disc golf and fishing in the pond.
Scattered ranch-style homes along with larger farmhouse estates
Branching off Highway 157 into the untouched Georgia forest, the scattered properties offer plenty of privacy. Styles and size vary, and there's no unified development or aesthetic. Homes rarely come on the market, with ranch-style and well-maintained manufactured homes going from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$200,000s. Larger estates, sometimes resembling cabins or farmhouses, can sell from the $600,000s to the $900,000s.
School choice at Walker County Schools
Students in Durham can attend Walker County Schools. Though the district offers a school choice program, most students start at Fairyland Elementary, which receives an A-minus grade from Niche. Chattanooga Valley Middle and Ridgeland High each receive a B. Ridgeland High has traditional clubs and extracurriculars such as band, drama and chorus, plus a robotics team.
Route 157 leads to Chattanooga
Despite the rural environs, downtown Chattanooga is roughly 15 miles away. Route 157 runs through the center of Durham, heading north through Lookout Mountain and into Tennessee. The community's isolated location means most residents own cars, but Walker Transit operates a on-demand system throughout Walker County.
Few businesses in Durham, but more in Chattanooga Valley and Fort Oglethorpe
Durham doesn't have very many businesses. Cornerstone Market sits alongside a gas station off Route 157, while Scenic Outdoors and Feed offers firearms and farm supplies. Restaurants can be found just outside Durham, including Trading Post Smokehouse to the south or the Dinner Bell in Chattanooga Valley to the northeast. “A lot of people have to drive to Chattanooga to actually shop,” Talbot says. “And I know a lot of people that go to Fort Oglethorpe to shop.”
Events at the Mount Pleasant Community Center
The Mount Pleasant Community Center is a hub for the rural community. The center offers events like potlucks and music performances. Otherwise, residents often head to nearby hubs like Trenton, Lookout Mountain or even Chattanooga for cultural events.
