Naomi centers itself around the outdoors, but LaFayette amenities are close by
Within the foothills of John’s Mountain is the small rural Walker County community of Naomi. Mostly residential, locals enjoy a quiet setting with untouched fields and lush forest underscoring its bucolic atmosphere. “Naomi is a cute little charming community,” says Jessica Teems, Realtor with Teems & Teems Realty, who lives close by in LaFayette. “There is not one drive in the area that won’t take your breath away, from the pastureland through LaFayette, into Naomi.” Though separated from Chattanooga’s city bustle to the north, short trips lead to the parks, shops and local businesses of LaFayette, 4 miles west.
Hunting, fishing, hiking and more keep locals active
“Because it’s so rural, there is a lot to do outdoors,” Teems says. “The area is a hot spot for hunting.” Queen City Lake is a short drive northwest, with a sandy beach for swimming and a public boat launch for local fishermen. “Pigeon Mountain is nearby and has a lot of hiking trails,” Teems says. Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area encompasses Shirley Miller Wildflower Trail, known for its springtime blooms, Dickson Creek Falls and several hunting areas. LaFayette features a handful of maintained green spaces, including a namesake dog park and LaFayette Municipal Park, which has a public swimming pool, athletic courts and more.
Ranch-style homes appear most often and acreage varies throughout
Rural roads stretch through Naomi and run parallel to mature trees and open fields. Mid-to-late 20th-century Cottages and ranch-style homes sit back from the road at the end of long driveways, typically on unfenced multi-acre lots. “There’s a good mix,” Teems says. “I have sold homes in Naomi that are on a half-acre to 10 and 20 acres. The good thing about the area is that you can find almost exactly what you’re looking for." Homes do not come on the market often, but homebuyers can expect a median home price of $185,000. The community also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
From local shops and big-box stores to Wardlaw's Lucky Eye Q's famous barbecue
LaFayette is the greater area’s shopping and dining hub. “We are getting more commercial businesses and shops, so you don’t have to deal with the traffic of getting into Chattanooga,” Teems says. Alongside a Food City, the city features a handful of locally owned shops like Attic Treasures Family Store and a strip mall with big-box stores like Walmart Supercenter and Bealls. “We’ve got the mom and pop restaurants that are hidden gems,” Teems says. Wardlaw’s Lucky Eye Q is the go-to spot for barbecue. “People drive hours to get the barbecue there,” Teems says. Toki Sushi & Steak House is another popular spot and serves authentic Japanese dishes.
LaFayette High School offers Career, Technical and Agricultural Education
Walker County Schools serves the community and earns a B rating on Niche. Naomi Elementary School has a C-plus, and LaFayette Middle School earns a B-minus. LaFayette High School scores a B and offers Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE). The program centers around hands-on learning in real work settings to hone skills needed to succeed in careers ranging from Dental Science to Construction and Start-up Entrepreneurship.
The City of LaFayette and Naomi Baptist Church bring the community together
LaFayette hosts various events throughout the year, including Music on Main. The monthly outdoor concerts bring local and regional artists downtown for an evening of music and drinks. “They also have a farmers market every Sunday, and people from Naomi come into town for things like that.” The market features live music and vendors selling anything from artisanal bread and fresh produce to handmade goods. Naomi Baptist Church hosts gatherings closer to home, like a summer car cruise-in and occasional community meals.
Getting around on U.S. Route 27
Considering there are no public transportation options, Naomi is a car-dependent community. East Villanow Street runs west into LaFayette. From here, residents can hop on U.S. Route 27 to reach Chattanooga, some 31 miles north. CHI Memorial Hospital-Georgia is the nearest medical center, 22 miles in the same direction. State routes 136 and 151 link the community to surrounding areas and are accessible from within the community.
