Rural Lafayette neighborhood with a charitable spirit
Cornfields surround Buck Creek, a rural enclave 9 miles northeast of Lafayette. Although this small town has just over 100 homes, generosity best defines Buck Creek — not size. Community support is both a practical and fun expression of identity here. A fundraising fish fry over seven decades strong is a matter of local pride. The giving spirit is also part of the school system. "Our teachers have to spend very little out of pocket because if they put in the newsletter that they need something for a project, it will come through tenfold," says Linda Fields, Principal at Hershey Elementary.
Longtime teachers at Hershey Elementary
Tippecanoe School Corporation oversees three top-tier schools in the area. Hershey Elementary and East Tipp Middle are about 2 miles away and earn an A-minus from Niche. With lots of longtime residents in the area, Hershey Elementary has seen multiple generations of families. And that longevity extends to the teachers. "There is very little staff turnover, so we take pride in the family atmosphere that we create at Hershey," Fields says. About 12 miles away, William Henry Harrison High earns an A. Teens can earn at least 30 college credits alongside their high school diploma through the Early College Program.
Fish Fry draws a big crowd for a good cause
The first annual Buck Creek Fish Fry was held in 1946 to raise funds for the volunteer fire department. Almost 80 years later, this community event is a big deal — and not only for people who live here. Fields says the well-attended event draws many people from surrounding areas, including Lafayette. There's a bake sale where cakes can sell for $100 to support the firefighters. The fish fry happens every August at East Tipp Middle School.
Smaller bungalows and large farmhouses
Single-family homes line Buck Creek's quiet residential roads, which branch off Main Street and Railroad Street. Early 20th-century houses vary in size and style, from smaller ranches and bungalows to a stately 3,800-square-foot farmhouse. While not every property includes acreage, some sit on as many as 1 to 5 acres. On Main Street, the front yards are well maintained and modestly sized, with enough room for a mature tree or two. Depending on the property size, prices can range from $160,000 to $470,000.
Family reunions at Buck Creek Community Center
This neighborhood offers outdoor space for its residents. A baseball field and playground surround Buck Creek Community Center, a popular venue for family reunions. Twelve miles away, Prophetstown State Park offers many outdoor exploration and camping opportunities.
Multi-generational businesses in Buck Creek
Buck Creek has a few family-owned businesses passed down through generations. Buck Creek Elevator is an animal feed store in the center of town that has been owned by multiple generations since 1942. Huffman and Hawbaker Farms is another family-run operation that produces seasonal u-pick strawberries. For all the other daily essentials, Lafayette is a go-to. Mountain Jacks Steakhouse offers quality prime rib and a cozy dining room with a fireplace. The city has a wide selection of grocery stores, including Pay Less on the north side.
State Road 25 goes to Lafayette
Buck Creek is well-connected to the Lafayette. State Road 25 connects with Schuyler Ave to get into the city. There are no bike lanes or public transportation connections to Lafayette.
