A historic neighborhood in Lafayette's growing downtown
Ellsworth Romig is a historic district in the heart of Lafayette’s growing downtown. The neighborhood hosts architecture from the turn of the 20th century, where both working-class and affluent Lafayette residents made their home. Today, people fix up the neighborhood’s historic properties and enjoy proximity to local restaurants and a wealth of cultural attractions. “Our downtown areas are developing,” says Cheryl Butcher, a longtime Lafayette resident and Realtor with Keller Williams. She says recent attention on the urban core has brought significant change. “It’s coming around, but it’s been work to get it there. They’re really working on making the downtown a lot friendlier to walk and enjoy all the different businesses and restaurants.”

Mornings in Ellsworth Romig can start at Smittybread, a beloved neighborhood bakery serving varied flavors of sourdough loaves and other sweet and savory treats. The Spot Tavern next door comes alive after dark with patio poetry readings, trivia and live music acts from across the country. More options are clustered along Main Street a couple blocks north of the neighborhood. One of several hotspots is DT Kirby’s, a Chicago-themed bar and restaurant owned by a local husband and wife pair. There are a handful of specialty grocers and convenience stores on Main Street, though bigger trips require chains outside the neighborhood, including Pay Less 2.5 miles away.

Off 9th Street, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and the Haan Museum both showcase local Indiana artists. Turn-of-the-century Ellsworth Romig homes
The neighborhood’s history is most evident in its architecture. Because it served people of all classes, Ellsworth Romig has homes at dramatically different price points. Single-family builds typically fall between $50,000 and $250,000, and multi-family dwellings can scale up to $400,000. Investors and buyers looking for a project may gravitate to the neighborhood’s historic homes dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Many of these bungalows, Foursquares, Colonial Revivals and Queen Anne homes sit tightly packed together, though they accompany tree-studded backyards which residents populate with pools or play equipment. Larger Craftsman homes and Victorians once housed Lafayette’s economic elite. New homes are popping up alongside historic builds, as well as apartment buildings and some townhomes closer to the river. The neighborhood’s proximity to Purdue University makes this an attractive place for students to rent.
