Many homes here are within a few blocks of the Hanna Community Center, a long-running recreation and service organization born out of racial segregation in Lafayette. “There wasn’t a place for women and minorities to have a community center, so we had to build that,” Smith says. Today, the 100-year-old organization is one of the only multicultural centers in the city, offering senior programming and transportation as well as youth camps and tutoring. The nonprofit sits beside the Northend Community Center, a faith-based organization with its own roster of youth and adult programming, as well as a pool and fitness center.
