Elmwood's fixer-uppers
The neighborhood has a mix of fixer-uppers and renovated properties priced between $115,000 and $200,000. Many homes were built between the 1940s and the 1970s, and include modest minimal traditionals, brick and vinyl ranch-style homes, split-levels and shotgun builds. Investors can find properties already split into multifamily units. Though homes generally have driveways, there is ample street parking for guests and additional vehicles.Two-bedroom condo units in the southwest portion of the neighborhood typically sell around $100,000.
Next door to the Hanna Community Center
Many homes here are within a few blocks of the Hanna Community Center, a long-running recreation and service organization born out of racial segregation in Lafayette. “There wasn’t a place for women and minorities to have a community center, so we had to build that,” Smith says. Today, the 100-year-old organization is one of the only multicultural centers in the city, offering senior programming and transportation as well as youth camps and tutoring. The nonprofit sits beside the Northend Community Center, a faith-based organization with its own roster of youth and adult programming, as well as a pool and fitness center.Nearby Arlington Park has tennis courts and a playground, while Murdock Park a mile south has a popular — and challenging — disc golf course.
Lafayette schools earn above-average scores
Children begin school at Vinton Elementary, then move on to Sunnyside Intermediate School less than a mile from many homes. Tecumseh Junior High serves seventh and eighth graders. All three schools have a B-minus rating from Niche. Students at Jefferson High — which locals call “Jeff” — can get ahead on college credits through dual enrollment courses with Purdue University and Ivy Tech Community College. The high school has an A-minus from Niche.Family-friendly events at Columbian Park
Elmwood is well-connected to year-round festivities within the urban core. Loeb Stadium, where the Aviators baseball team plays, is within 2 miles, as is the Columbian Park Zoo, which hosts holiday events such as “Boo in the Zoo.” Locals also attend HannaFest, an annual summer celebration put on by the Hanna Community Center. The event features local vendors, live music and family activities.Downtown Lafayette 2 miles away

The Downtowner Restaurant is a long-running hotspot known for generous portions at breakfast and lunch. The menu has unexpected specialties, including a Monte Cristo sandwich on cinnamon toast.
