Neighborhood with a hidden park in northeast Lafayette
With a hidden green space at its core and access to restaurants just outside, Hedgewood is a suburban area with some surprises on Lafayette's northeast side. The neighborhood contains its own park, incorporated into a suburban residential landscape. The entrance to this little-known park is tucked between single-family homes, making it a well-kept secret except to the residents of this area. "Most people don’t know about the park," says Cheryl Butcher, Managing Broker at Keller Williams Realty. "I didn't know it was there until I sold a house there that backed up onto it." One of the factors in developing this neighborhood was the Market Square Shopping Center, which still stands as a shopping and dining area less than a mile away.

Hidden path to Hedgewood Park
Hedgewood Park provides one acre of green space at the heart of the neighborhood. The only entrance is an inconspicuous mulch path located between two private houses on Beverly Lane, although a sign points the way. Most of the parkland consists of an open grassy field large enough for a game of soccer. The park also has a playground with a six-foot slide, a dome climbing structure, a springrider and a swingset. Rest Haven Memorial Park is a funeral home and cemetery taking up a large portion of the neighborhood's northeast corner. Locals come here to pay their respects or soak up the peaceful atmosphere around the duck pond. It's the resting place of Emmett Kelly, who portrayed the clown character Weary Willy. The neighborhood is also near Munger Park, one of the city's larger green spaces with a 1-mile paved trail and a fishing pond.
Ranch-style homes on quiet cul-de-sacs
This residential area contains smaller lots and smaller homes, averaging around 1,482 square feet. There are compact, rectangular ranch-style houses with a shorter width than regular ranches. Exteriors vary from stone to brick to vinyl. Prices start around $115,000 and reach up to $225,000. These properties date back to the '50s and '60s, but some have received upgrades like new roofs in recent years. Despite small lot sizes, residents enjoy their outdoor spaces, whether walking the shady sidewalks, setting up a lawn chair on the driveway or opening up a garage door. Rather than a typical grid pattern, this area has rounded streets branching off into cul-de-sacs. Berkley Road, Beverly Lane and Hedgewood Drive all surround Hedgewood Park.

Birth of a local favorite at Market Square
Market Square is a convenient shopping and dining center less than a mile west. This strip mall is home to around 30 shops, restaurants and stores. There are unique local businesses specializing in candy, cameras and games. Arni's Restaurant set up its flagship location here in 1965, and soon after expanded its seating from 100 guests to 500. It has grown into one of Lafayette's most popular local chains, serving pizza with toppings spread all the way to the edges. "Arni's was one of the first pizza shops in the city, and they've been a big part of our community," Butcher says. Operating since 1951, The Downtowner is another Lafayette staple serving pancakes, eggs benedict and scramblers until 2 p.m. most days. Market Square also has grocery options such as Dollar General and a Pay Less.

Jefferson High is a state-wide standout
Thanks to its north side location, Hedgewood is less than a mile from two Lafayette School Corporation entities. Just north, Vinton Elementary earns a B-minus from Niche. Students in the district typically progress to Sunnyside Intermediate, located less than a mile south, for fifth and sixth grade. It receives a B-minus along with Tecumseh Junior High, serving seventh and eighth graders. Students finish their K-12 years at Jefferson High, earning and A-minus. Niche ranked Jefferson number four on its list of Standout High Schools in Indiana.
Bowling and Brews at Market Square
Home to bars and entertainment, Market Square is also a nighttime destination. Market Square Lanes adds a music and light show to cosmic bowling sessions every night at 9 p.m. Inside the bowling alley, North End Pub serves domestic beer by the pitcher. The venue also hosts live music on weekends. The Halloween Bash is a North End Pub tradition 11 years strong featuring live music and a costume contest. Riehle's Filling Station is another local watering hole with events such as the Summer Bash, featuring a DJ, dart tournaments and drink specials.
