Historic roots and future plans in downtown Lafayette
Lincoln is a dynamic, multicultural neighborhood in downtown Lafayette. Though rich in history, Lincoln is propelling into the future as residents, local organizations and the city work together on the Lincoln Community Enhancement Plan, a multi-step project to elevate livability within the neighborhood. The plan addresses many of the issues residents here are most passionate about, including safer walkability, increased parkland and improving housing conditions. As Lincoln and the downtown core see more investment, transplants will continue to make a home here. “For young parents it’s great, for kids it’s a great place,” says Andrew Smith IV, Executive Director of the Hanna Community Center. “It’s about knowing where those pockets of hidden gems are. I love uncovering those.”

Fixing up Lincoln's historic homes
Lincoln’s historic homes date back to the turn of the 20th century, when Foursquares, Colonial Revivals, Victorians and Craftsman homes ruled the market. Buyers looking for a project can find homes starting at $75,000. A 2022 assessment by the City of Lafayette found that nearly half of Lincoln’s residences — homes and apartments — were in “average” condition, meaning the buildings had some structural damage and need for aesthetic improvements. Most people in the neighborhood rent, as many homes are arranged in multi-family units, an attractive feature for investors. Prices here ascend with renovations, and fully updated properties sell up to $225,000.

Free produce for harvest at the Lincoln Sharing Garden
The neighborhood’s largest green space is Greenbush Cemetery, where some residents take walks. The Lincoln Sharing Garden is also an option for community members looking to try out gardening or pick some free, fresh produce. For kids, a small playground sits in front of the Hartford Hub, a faith-based community center. Otherwise, residents take a roundabout path to Lyboult Sports Park, which is separated from the neighborhood by railroad tracks. The destination park has softball fields and basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a portion of the Wabash Heritage Trail which runs along the river. Lincoln residents have advocated for more accessible park space, and plans are in place for a new park across from the sharing garden, as well as an art-filled fence buffering the neighborhood from the railroad.

Neighbors convene for HannaFest, an annual celebration of the nearby Hanna Community Center with live music, food and family activities. The service organization opened as the Lincoln Center in 1923 intended as a recreational facility for Black youth within segregated Lafayette. “We are one of the oldest nonprofits in Lafayette,” Smith says. Today, the organization is a true multicultural space, offering programs to children and seniors from all backgrounds. “The Hanna Community Center transformed from the Lincoln Center to incorporate everyone. We really are a melting pot in Lafayette.”
