Historic residential area planned around the contours of the land

In 1873, prominent Lafayette banker James J. Perrin purchased and platted the land known today as Perrin — the city's first planned residential area which conformed to geographic contours. Thanks to Perrin's vision, this neighborhood still stands out today in architecture, location and design. Located on hilly land, this neighborhood had to deviate from the typical grid pattern. Here, streets gently curve around the slopes. Nineteenth-century homes are perched atop these hills, giving grand estates an even more elevated look. Yet this neighborhood was not just occupied by the wealthy; most of the architecture represents the late 19th-century middle class. Dense tree cover adds a sense of tranquility to the neighborhood, despite its convenient location near the center of town. "The area has many large, old trees and winding streets, which gives it a historic, quiet feel," says Kelly Lippie, Curator of Collections and Membership Coordinator at the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. "It's also close to downtown, without the noise and traffic of a downtown area."

Striking Queen Annes and humble bungalows

Houses here date between 1869 and 1923; most were built between 1875 and 1890. Many are single-family, while others have been converted into duplexes for rental income. Toward the neighborhood's south end, Perrin Avenue and Tinkler Street feature Italianate properties with flat, brick facades and tall, narrow windows. In the center, Perrin Ave and Cason Street feature Queen Anne architecture with more intricate detailing. They often have expansive front porches with decorative wood trim and are multicolored, accenting the ornamentation. Conversely, there are also more modest styles, such as the bungalows on Perrin Ave between Herbert and North Eighteenth Streets. The National Register of Historic Places, Indiana Historical Bureau's State Historic Marker and Lafayette's Historic Preservation Commission all recognize Perrin as a historic neighborhood. "Lafayette's recognition means Perrin is subject to restrictions in architectural development or renovations that will help protect the historic nature of the buildings," Lippie says. Some homes were rebuilt with strict attention to replicating the original architectural features. Many houses are placed on terraced land, with multiple clusters of stairs leading up to the front door. Single and multi-family homes can range between $105,000 and $280,000.

Parks to the east and west of Perrin

Parks are located directly east and west of the neighborhood. Just east, Murdock Park mirrors Perrin's wooded vibes. First opening in 1987, it's located on 39 acres of urban forest. A half-mile interpretive trail, identifying 40 varieties of trees, offers a picturesque walk through the park. Two picnic shelters are large enough for a birthday party or celebration with 50 guests. In the wintertime, residents head to Murdock Park's sledding hill. Located at the top of the hill, Katy's Cabin rents out sleds and serves hot chocolate. The park also features a redesigned 18-hole disc golf course. To the west, Stockton Park is Lafayette's newest pocket park. This small outdoor space has a spring rider for younger kids and a swinging bench where parents may sit back and relax with a book.

Local restaurants thrive downtown

Bordering downtown, Perrin has direct access to the city center's unique shopping and dining experiences, a shopping and dining scene that has undergone significant changes in recent years. "A trend we've noticed is these corporate restaurants have closed and the independent ones are thriving because we all do something different," says Levi Whiteman, Assistant General Manager at East End Grill, serving scratch-made, New American cuisine. The truffle fries, flank steak tacos and shrimp and grits are in high demand. Also downtown, McCord Candies is an old-fashioned sweet shop with a soda fountain and gourmet chocolates. Walgreens has some necessities just south of Perrin. Target has a full selection of groceries about 2 miles east.

The breweries set up on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge, overlooking the Wabash River. In September, German culture is front and center at Germanfest, featuring food, beer, wine tents and live polka music. Murdock Park is another venue for Lafayette events, like family movie nights during Art in the Park.
