Former railroad community with longstanding traditions
On the north side of Lafayette, Indiana, Saint Lawrence McAllister is a neighborhood steeped in tradition. This neighborhood was the center of the action at the height of Lafayette’s railroad days, particularly during the '40s and '50s. It’s just east of the former Monon Railroad Shops, once the city’s biggest employer, where workers tinkered with diesel engines and repaired freight cars. Those workers helped shape this neighborhood, constructing their homes out of materials from the boxcar assembly. They centered their lives around the sound of the blaring, brass steam whistle, signaling the start and end of the work day.
Their influence remains through the collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century homes. Purdue University also nods to the Shops through its mascot, the Boilermakers. Although the shop whistle has gone quiet, trains still rattle along the tracks that surround the neighborhood. Several longtime neighborhood institutions — a Boys and Girls Club, a sharing garden and a recreation center — help to enrich everyday life here. Although tradition is a key component of Saint Lawrence McAllister, this neighborhood embraces change. A large source of improvement comes from investors purchasing and renovating distressed homes. “They've really made a hard effort in that area to improve the feel and vibe," says Kyle Charters, a broker with the Charters Team at Indiana Integrity Realtors. "Even though that's a slow process, that effort is certainly being made."

Bungalows and Victorians ripe for renovation
The sound of a buzz saw and the smell of fresh wood signal the updates happening in Saint Lawrence McAllister.
This residential neighborhood consists of single-family homes. With many properties still ripe for renovation, it's a relatively affordable pocket of Lafayette. Yet houses don't last long here, selling after about 20 days on the market compared to the national average of 43 days. Many investors are scooping up homes to renovate and rent out or sell. On the higher end of the price range, properties may have updated kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and other features. Fixer-uppers can start around $70,000 while finished houses can go for up to $230,000.
Homes date from 1890 through 1950 and preserve original features, such as hardwood floors. Smaller homes, starting around 600 square feet, also provide affordable options in this neighborhood. They include petite bungalows with a simple rectangular shape. Other bungalows have Craftsman features, such as covered porches. Some larger and more ornate homes can be found on the neighborhood's west side. Victorians may have steeply-pitched roofs with decorative tracing and shingles in the roof gables. "Those were the homes that they built to be closer to the railroad," says Amanda Oakley, a broker with Trueblood Real Estate.

Kids can play safely at McAllister Recreation Center
Recreation opportunities abound in this neighborhood, from organized indoor activities to parks, both big and small. First opening in 1927, McAllister Recreation Center is housed in the stately brick building that was once Longlois Elementary School. The center offers outdoor play areas including ball fields and extensive indoor facilities including game rooms, rental rooms and a gym available for use with a daily or monthly pass. On a warm summer weekday, the center comes to life with young voices as kids sit down to enjoy lunch during summer camp. Sporties for Shorties is another popular program, teaching four and five-year-olds the basics of basketball, soccer and other sports. "It's a huge asset for the community and the neighborhood to have a safe place for younger kids to hang out," Charters says.
Several parks offer free play close by. A bed of orange daylilies marks the entrance to Linnwood, a well-maintained pocket park on the neighborhood's south side. In 2020, the city put in a new multi-age playground here, featuring a colorful seesaw for toddlers and a rope crossing for older kids. McAllister Park offers a scenic 280-acre outdoor space just west of the neighborhood where wildflowers grow to several feet tall. Walking paths wander through native Indiana prairies and forests where deer frolic and yellow warblers sing. It also features an expansive radio control model airplane flying field, home to the Lafayette Cloud Jockeys.
