South Oakland is a central Lafayette neighborhood that is walkable to Columbian Park, a well-loved Lafayette attraction. This relaxed, residential area is one of Lafayette's older neighborhoods, with homes dating as far back as the late 19th century perched on shady, tree-lined streets. Vintage styles from the early to mid-20th century
South Oakland has a collection of single-family homes on compact lots with well-kept, grassy lawns. With a network of sidewalks and plenty of tree cover, this neighborhood is highly walkable. Some of the neighborhood's older homes are on the north side, including early 20th-century workers' cottages, Gabled-Ell houses, bungalows and Cape Cods. Branching southward, there are ranch-style homes from the '50s. "There are a lot of homes that have been remodeled over time, and some homes that are still kind of stuck in the time when they were built," Whitaker says. "But they're still gorgeous because those homes were made to last with a stable foundation." Prices can range between $150,000 and $270,000.

Water slides and penguin encounters at Columbian Park
Columbian Park is one of this neighborhood's main attractions half a mile north. Combining a zoo, a waterpark and a baseball stadium, this park has been a Lafayette staple for generations and keeps getting better over time. Since 2021, it's received significant updates, including the new Loeb Stadium — a baseball and events venue — a massive playground with three 24-foot-tall climbing towers and a new penguin exhibit at the zoo. While some Lafayette residents remember the park's old circular swimming pool, today, kids can race down the slides at Tropicanoe Cove. Columbian Park Zoo has a walk-through wallaby enclosure and other animals from across the world.

Walking to Oakland Elementary
South Oakland is centrally located for Lafayette School Corporation schools. Parents and youngsters can walk to Oakland Elementary, located on the neighborhood's north side. This is one of Lafayette's most highly-rated elementary schools, with a B-plus from Niche. It also ranks 14th on Niche's list of standout elementary schools in Indiana. Other schools are about a mile away including Sunnyside Intermediate and Tecumseh Junior High, which both receive a B-minus, and Jefferson High, which earns a B-plus. Musicians can thrive in the Jefferson Marching Band, learning balance and blend, stylistic refinement and showmanship. Purdue University is just over 3 miles away, and it offers a choice of nearly 150 undergraduate majors.

Columbian Park has become an events destination with the new Loeb Stadium. Lafayette's home baseball team, the Aviators, is beating attendance records, thanks to the stadium's 2,600-person capacity. This collegiate team plays games here in the summer. The stadium's summer concert series caters to different music tastes, hosting 38 Special and a Taylor Swift-themed DJ set in recent years.
Main Street leads downtown
Main Street is a main connection to Columbian Park and downtown Lafayette. Bordering the neighborhood's east side, the route leads north and connects with Columbia Street west to get downtown. The city center is just 1.5 miles away. The 4A bus also stops along Main Street every 30 minutes.
