Innovative elementary school at the heart of northside Lafayette neighborhood

Anchored by a well-loved elementary school, Vinton is a sought-after neighborhood on the north end of Lafayette. Once here, families tend to settle for a while, and even for multiple generations. Kids follow in their parents' footsteps at Vinton Elementary School, which originally opened in 1951. For residents both new and old, the school is just one neighborhood amenity offering a way to connect. "It is truly a neighborhood school where families come to our playground in the evenings and on the weekends to play and socialize with other families," says Vinton Elementary Principal Cindy Preston. "Many of our students walk to school with their neighbor friends. Families look out for one another here."

Four-day school week at Vinton Elementary

At the center of the neighborhood, Vinton Elementary is this neighborhood's easily-walkable elementary school, earning a B-minus from Niche. With approval from the State Board of Education, in the 2024-2025 school year, Vinton will become the first school in Indiana to operate on a four-day school week. The shift will benefit parents looking for a better work-life balance, Preston says. While the school embraces innovative changes, it is also known for tradition, serving families through multiple generations. "We love the history and pride that comes with our school community," Preston says. Through the Lafayette School Corporation, kids can attend Sunnyside Intermediate for fifth and sixth grade, and Tecumseh Junior High for seventh and eighth grade. Both schools earn a B-minus. Jefferson High, earning a B-plus, helps teens earn early college credits with over 60 dual enrollment classes.
