One cannot enter Cajun Country without hearing the tragic tale of Evangeline. The young woman and her lover were parted when the Acadians were forced from their home in Nova Scotia in the 1760s. The name also belongs to an established neighborhood less than two miles from Downtown Lafayette. Evangeline contains shopping centers, grocery stores, easy access to Interstate 10 and Highway 167 and numerous dining options. It also has one of the only two historic districts in the city. Sterling Grove is a 25-acre area with nearly 60 buildings constructed between the 1840s and the 1930s. This hidden gem was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The community is also only four miles from the Lafayette Regional Airport and has numerous bus stops throughout the area. Whether you crave history, the outdoors, shopping or a combination of them all, Evangeline waits to welcome residents home.
Surrounded by trees, just minutes from downtown

Filled with live oaks, magnolias and blazing floral blooms, the area has a strong community with many civic organizations having chapters there. Homes tend to be traditional in design, and many are historic. You’ll find everything from cottages to Arts and Crafts houses to ranch-style residences, along with a smattering of new construction. Prices range from $60,000 for a two-bedroom cottage needing some love to $390,000 for a historic Queen Anne with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

City Park is also found in the Evangeline neighborhood, and the expansive green space contains another kind of green: the Hebert Municipal Golf Course. Opened in 1926, the gorgeous 18-hole course hosts tournaments for youth and adults as well as annual summer camps. It’s the oldest course in Southern Louisiana and features challenging hazards and sand traps.
Residents get everything from the Stirling Lafayette Shopping Center
The neighborhood is home to the Stirling Lafayette Shopping Center, a 450,000-square-foot complex containing Target, Five Below and dozens more stores. There are plenty of dining options about, too. If locals can’t tell they’re close to a Meche’s Donut King by the tantalizing aromas, they’ll be sure to know after just a glimpse at the company’s mascot, a happy crown-wearing donut. Acadiana has many Meche’s, although an independent operator owns each business. The Meche’s on East Willow is recognizable by the large mural encompassing the building’s lower half and is famous for its King Cakes each Mardi Gras season. Fat Albert’s Fried Chicken is another neighborhood staple known for low prices and good food. In business for over 50 years, the establishment focuses on chicken but has shrimp and catfish, too.

Stop and smell the azaleas
Lafayette is known as the “City of Azaleas,” and Evangeline is part of the Historic Azalea Trail. An attraction since the 1930s, the trail is 25 miles long and includes crepe myrtles, Japanese magnolias, camellias and live oaks in addition to multiple varieties of azaleas. These heralds of spring burst forth in spectacular colors each February and March as welcome reminders warmer weather is on the way. The trail is easily walked through downtown, the historic districts of Freetown-Port Rico and Sterling Grove and the city’s garden district. A trolley tour is also available if you’d like to traverse the entire pat
