Old Louisiana charm in Heymann Park
As part of the McComb-Veazey Cultural District, Heymann Park is one of Lafayette’s oldest neighborhoods. The Evangeline Thruway runs along the western edge, separating the residential streets from the downtown district. This bustling and diverse slice of the city is rich in old Louisiana charm, but it’s also seen its share of hard times. In 2008, residents and business owners joined forces to create the McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Coterie. This nonprofit organization strives to refresh the areas that need improvement while preserving the community’s history. “Some houses have been passed down from generation to generation, so the people who live there have been there for a long time,” says David Adams, Realtor with Keller Williams.

The Heymann Park hideaway
The neighborhood’s namesake park spills across 28 acres on South Orange Street near Paul Breaux Middle School. The half-mile jogging trail winds beneath mature trees and through open green spaces alongside the playing fields, sports courts and playground. Heymann Park Recreation Center recently hosted a Youth Action Summit to encourage young citizens and their families to take active roles in the community. Veteran’s Park Simcoe is on the other end of the neighborhood and a lovely place for a stroll in early spring when the azaleas are in full bloom.
Small bungalows in need of TLC
Budget-conscious home buyers and opportunity-seeking investors should add Heymann Park to their shortlists. “The majority of sales are to investors,” Adams says. “They buy them so they can rent them out, and the rate of return is pretty good.” Single-story shotgun-style homes and bungalows — many requiring major renovations — crowd the narrow streets. Prices start at around $30,000 for a tiny fixer-upper and top out at $200,000 for an updated three-bedroom cottage. There are plenty of empty lots to build on and a surprising amount of mature tree growth, considering how close the neighborhood is to downtown. Most existing properties date to the 1940s, and while they don’t come with a lot of yard space, many do have private or shared driveways.
Heymann Park is part of the larger McComb-Veazey coterie.
Being one of the older ares of Lafayette, Heymann Park leans towards charming, historic housing.

Student life at Northside High School
Most Heymann Park students start at nearby Woodvale Elementary, a school that gets an A-minus from Niche and offers visual- and hearing-impaired classes. Heymann Park is also the home of St. Genevieve Elementary, a private Catholic school.

Creole cuisine and cracklins from Kirk’s
When a neighborhood is predominantly residential, its few businesses make a huge impression. That’s certainly the case with Kirk’s U-Needa-Butcher, a meat market that’s been in business for over 55 years. Residents drop by for southern classics like tasso ham, andouille sausage and Kirk’s famous “cluckin’ quacklins.” Stuffed bread and plate lunches populate the menu at Creole Lunch House on 12th Street, right up the road from the McComb-Veazey Community House. Pack & Paddle is the place for camping gear and outdoor apparel. Residents can shop for groceries at Super 1 Foods, a few miles north on West Willow Street.

Dive into Downtown Alive!
Heymann Park is so close to the heart of Lafayette that residents can easily take advantage of the special events and nightlife that tap out the city’s beat. The Downtown Alive! concert series fills Parc San Souci with the vibrant sounds of regional artists throughout the spring and fall. April’s Festival International de Louisiane is a 5-day celebration of world music and cultural cuisine, with bands playing from 7 downtown stages. Surrey Street’s Brass Room is the closest nightclub, featuring outdoor seating, live music and a dance floor.
Crime
Crime The CAP Index gives Heymann Park a crime score only slightly higher than the national average. However, the risk of violent crime is higher than that of property-related incidents, a common trend in this portion of Lafayette. Initiatives like the McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Coterie are investing in projects, such as the Homegrowers Urban Farm, to help sustain and empower the community and its citizens.
Flights to and from the Hub City
Heymann Park residents enjoy easy access to the Lafayette Regional Airport and Vermilionville Historic Village, both of which are 5 minutes away by car. Route 90 and the Evangeline Thruway are the main routes in and out of town. Lafayette Transit Service runs buses throughout the neighborhood for those who prefer to explore the city without the hassle of driving. “A lot of people there rely on public transportation,” Adams says. Most stops are on Louisiana Avenue, 12th Street and East Pinhook Road.
