Modern neighborhood with canyons and an ocean view
Set back from iconic white-sand beaches, Portafina's contemporary homes rise and fall in desert hills surrounded by canyons. With scenic landscape views, this coastal community is minutes away from art galleries, local retail and recreation in Laguna Beach. "Our world-renowned beaches are some of the most gorgeous in Southern California," says Annette Harper, an area local and real estate agent at Douglas Elliman. "From local grocery stores to five-star restaurants and shopping, it's hard to beat Laguna Beach."
In Portafina, many homes are lined along the cliffs that offer panoramic views of the ocean or distant mountains.

Spanish revivals blend into a lush landscape
Colorful landscaping and gardens line the winding, hilly streets of Portafina. Architectural styles include Spanish revivals and contemporary homes built in the 21st century. With sleek stucco siding and flat modern features, two-story layouts can reach 4,000 square feet with private lots that blend into the rolling hills. Many homes have midcentury features like floor-to-ceiling windows, providing ocean and canyon views. "Some 1980s homes may have walls instead of windows," Harper says. "If a house is dated, the owners can rebuild it into something more modern and capitalize on the view." Home prices range from $3.5 million to $7 million.
The most expensive mansions in Portafina are mainly contemporary-style homes and feature luxury amenities, such as pools.
While Spanish-style homes are common throughout Portafina, some incorporate modern elements for a refined design.

Exploring the shoreline and canyon trails
Portafina is about a mile from sandy Victoria Beach. The beach is next to “Pirate Tower,” a 60-foot castle structure in a tidepool habitat with mossy rocks to explore. Moulton Meadows Park has tennis and basketball courts on a hilltop. It also has views of the mountains, the ocean and the city. Its hiking trails connect to Aliso and Wood Canyon Park, with 4,500 acres of canyon wilderness along Aliso Creek. “People are a little more laid-back in Laguna Beach,” Harper says. “It has a carefree, slower pace. You see people walking their dogs and taking a stroll with their friends.”

The Drake, in Laguna Beach, serves steak and seafood in a vintage atmosphere with live jazz. About 2 miles away, Downtown Laguna Beach has supermarkets such as Ralphs Fresh Fare and Whole Foods Market.

The city center is home to more than 100 art galleries with a long history of landscape painting. “Apart from our renowned beaches, we also have a great art community,” Harper says. The Laguna Art Museum has over 3,500 exhibits celebrating California’s history and landscapes. The Sawdust Art Festival offers various classes every weekend as vendors sell handmade ceramics and glass.

I-405 to LA and flying out of John Wayne
The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is the countywide bus system, while the Laguna Beach Trolley provides free rides to local landmarks. SR-1 goes through downtown and up the coast, connecting multiple cities and expressways. Traffic is heavier during peak tourism season. “If you live in Laguna, you’re willing to deal with traffic in the summertime,” Harper says. Los Angeles is about 55 miles northwest on Interstate 405. John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana provides domestic flights to U.S. cities and international flights to Canada and Mexico.
