Lakefront living
Lake Alfred isn’t the only lake that comprises the neighborhood to which it lends its name—merely the largest. Lake Swoope, Lake Echo, Lake George and Lake Griffin can all be found in this scenic community. “It’s a small town. It’s got lakes, it’s got fishing, it’s close to Winterhaven for shopping and not far from I-4,” says Steve Pospichal, a local realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “We used to swim in Lake Alfred at Lions Park when I was a kid. It’s just a nice community.” Though visiting Lake Alfred for a dip in the water or to munch on fresh seafood is popular, living in this small and peaceful community is something special. With a population of just over 5,000, this lakefront town contains a close-knit community of neighbors who love to fish and boat. The cost of living here is relatively low compared to other areas in the state, making it a great option for retirees or those searching for a quiet life.

Lake Alfred is home to mostly stucco ranch-style homes, many with two-car garages, that range in price from $32,000 homes for the 55-plus crowd to $1.2 million large contemporary, newly constructed homes that sit on lots with plenty of acreage. “We have waterfront homes, some homes that were built in the ‘50s and a lot of new subdivisions that have been going in, too,” Pospichal says. “New development is pretty consistent. I think Polk County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S. and I know it’s not slowing down.”

Tackle some oysters
Local anglers grab their supplies from Ron’s Tackle Box, which sells a large selection of new fishing tackle and decor, as well as antique and vintage tackle. The Barn Antiques is an antique itself, dating back to 1969. This shop is a treasure trove of items ranging from porcelain to antique furniture, lighting, mirrors, clocks and beyond. Those who prefer to sip out of classic teacups head to the dainty Lavender ‘n Lace Tea Room, which sits in a charming cottage with upscale tableware and kitschy decor. For a more substantial meal, there’s Gary’s Oyster Bar & Seafood House, which has been serving quality seafood to the community for over 40 years. In addition to the standard seafood fare, locals can munch on hard-to-find menu items like alligator tail, conch fritters and frog legs. The oysters, however, are the stars of the show—best eaten right at the bar where patrons can watch as staff shuck. Meanwhile, the Lake Alfred Diner is beloved for its homestyle cooking and friendly service. For groceries, residents merely have to drive 10 minutes west on Highway 92 to get to the local Winn-Dixie.
