Ransom Lake Natural Area stretches for 220 acres just south of Hardwood Acres. Its 3 miles of trails offer year-round recreation, from hiking and biking to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. An observation deck overlooks Ransom Lake. People can also head out onto Lake Ann. Almira Township Lakefront Park in downtown Lake Ann has a sandy beach for swimmers. The lake is also open for boating. To the northeast of the neighborhood, Almira Township Park has 42 acres with a paved mile-long loop trail, various sporting facilities and a playground.
Trail benches at Ransom Lake Natural Area's provide hikers with places to rest and view scenery.
Locals can head to Almira Township Lakeside Park to cool down at the public swimming beach.

Downtown Lake Ann's restaurants and cafes
Downtown Lake Ann is about 1 mile from Hardwood Acres, and has only a handful of restaurants, each with its own specialty. The Red Door Coffee House serves breakfast and lunch and offers a specialized drink of the day. People can sip their drinks on their patio shaded by red umbrellas. At night, people can start at Stone Oven for pizzas and burgers before heading over to Lake Ann Brewing Company for drinks. “The brewery and Stone Oven bring in live music spring through fall,” says real estate agent Leanne Deeren with Real Estate One. “Stone Oven provides the food, and the brewery provides the alcohol, but they both share the same space for their music venue.” Lake Ann Grocery is also here and is the only grocery store in town.
Red Door Coffee House is also home to some of the tastiest baked treats near Hardwood Acres.

Traverse City public schools and Eastern Michigan University programs
Hardwood Acres students start at Westwoods Elementary School before continuing to Traverse City West Middle School. Traverse City West Senior High School’s alpine ski team won state championships in 2023 and 2024. All three schools receive B-plus ratings from Niche. Just south of Hardwood Acres, the Parsons Center for Arts and Sciences is a residency program for Eastern Michigan University students and professors, where they live in cabins while taking classes at the center. The proximity to the natural area means residents can easily explore and study the local wildlife.
Westwoods Elementary School is the closest option for many Grand Traverse County neighborhoods.
West Senior High School in Traverse City serves over 1700 students across northern Michigan.

Annual summer traditions celebrated in Lake Ann
In late August, the Annual Lake Ann’s Music in the Park Festival features local musicians in Almira Township Park. Visitors bring their own lawn chairs and coolers, but food is available from a local vendor. In June, the town has the annual Run Lake Ann 5k through downtown in memory of beloved resident Erik Florip who died of a brain tumor. “The community really rallied around that family, and the 5k was a big success last year,” Deeren says.
Taking Long Lake Road into Traverse City for the medical center and airport
Maple Street is the main road through Hardwood Acres, connecting it with downtown Lake Ann to the west and Traverse City, about 13 miles away, to the northeast, though it turns into Long Lake Road along the way. Munson Medical Center is also located in the city, about 12 miles away. Cherry Capital Airport is the nearest airport option, about 16 miles away in Traverse City.
