Lyons Prairie
Exploring the trails of Lyons Prairie and Marsh Conservation Area
Lyons Prairie and Marsh Conservation Area, which fills the community’s northern side, offers plenty of ways to explore local wildlife. Visitors can spot the blooms of native flowers like trout lilies and bluebells while hiking along the 3.5 miles of wooded trails. The neighboring Hickory Grove Highlands Conservation Area is where many go to fish at Hickory Grove Riverfront and take their pups for a stroll through the meadows of Highlands Park. Meanwhile, those looking to spend time on the water can drop their boat and kayaks in at Port Barrington Marina on Behand Road 9 miles north. When winter rolls around, many head across the river to race sleds down the toboggan hill at Freier Farm, 6 miles east.Mid-1900s homes and recently built subdivisions
Breaking off of West River Road are narrow residential streets that run parallel to groves of lush forestry. Sitting at the end of driveways, which seamlessly blend into the road, are mostly mid-20th-century ranch-style homes. The community’s quiet nature, which scores a 1 out of 10 for crime on the CAP Index compared to the national average of 4, welcomes relaxing afternoon strolls. Houses along the waterfront, including New Traditional-style homes from the last 30 years, are seen with kayaks and canoes resting on the side of homes and private docks for recreation along the river. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, several subdivisions, including Harvest Glen and Dunvegan Meadows, were developed near the center of the neighborhood. These subdivisions present a more suburban feel, featuring newer builds and well-manicured lawns. Most homes fall within a price range from $300,000 to $600,000. However, larger homes along the waterfront or custom-built properties can exceed $850,000 and reach up to $1.2 million.Stopping in for a bite along West Main Street
Aside from stopping in for a drink at The Hidden Tap on East Main Street, residents must head 3 miles west to Cary for most shopping and dining opportunities. Trips to the area include picking up groceries from Jewel-Osco and stopping for a meal along West Main Street in downtown Cary. “Uncle Jerry’s Pizza Company is owned by a family in Cary and has exploded in popularity with their pizza,” says Burley. She also mentions Tracks Bar & Grill, located across the street, as a frequented spot for locals. Known as the place to go for burgers, the laid-back tavern has served the area for over 30 years. From here, a 3-mile drive northwest leads to a shopping development, home to retailers like Target, Kohl’s and several others.Testing out different fields at Cary-Grove High School
Young students enroll at Deer Path Elementary School, which has a B on Niche, and B-plus-rated Cary Junior High School. Meanwhile, older students attend classes at Cary-Grove High School, which holds an A rating. The high school participates in the school district’s Micro-Internship Program, allowing students to narrow their professional interests through working with local businesses and organizations.Attending the events of downtown Cary
The Cary-Grove Area Chamber of Commerce throws its annual Cary Main Street Fest in late September. The two-day staple event closes off East Main Street, replacing cars with local bands that play from the morning into the evening and vendors of the Craft Brew Festival, which is held simultaneously. From June through September, Cary Train Station, along the same stretch, hosts the Cary Farmers Market every Sunday Morning.Taking the yellow line to Chicago
With the help of Interstate 290, State Route 53 and U.S. Route 14, commuters can reach Chicago a 51-mile drive southeast. According to Burley, many in the area also hop on the Metra at Cary Train Station, which offers one-hour and forty-minute rides into the city on the yellow line. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is a 31-mile drive in the same direction, West Balmoral Avenue. Closer to home is the medical care provided at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 7 miles southeast, off State Route 22.
