Country living close to "The Caladium Capital of the World"
Resting against Grassy Lake is the unincorporated Sun Lakes neighborhood of Highlands County. Much of Lake Placid is still a rural landscape, with shooting ranges and hunting preserves just south of the city. Sun Lakes is surrounded by farms, orange groves, stables, nurseries, Grassy Lake and Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Refuge. According to Will Dibble, a Sebring resident and Broker at RE/MAX Realty Plus, groups of streets in many communities throughout Florida have a synchronous theme. Aptly named streets, such as Melody and Rhapsody Courts, private canals and beaches jut out in rectangular sections, like the keys of a piano. Around every turn is dreamy, starry-eyed roads with names such as Phantasy Avenue, Imagination and Rainbow Drives. Lake Placid is considered "The Caladium Capital of the World" as the city has almost 1,000 acres of family-owned Caladium farms, like nearby Hendry Caladiums. Although Sun Lakes offers homeowners a slower, country lifestyle compared to busier coastal towns, it isn't far from what Lake Placid offers. Downtown Lake Placid was named "America's Most Interesting Town" by Readers Digest Magazine, thanks partly to quirky clown cut-outs, a giant bronze bear and an assortment of murals and painted trash cans throughout.

Sun Lakes has land and ranch-style homes for sale
Both paved and gravel roads are framed by a dense thicket of towering pines and native scrub plants. Most properties on the market are quarter-acre vacant lots priced between $7,000 and $25,000. Like many communities on the outskirts of town, Dibble says citrus farms and land from Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Environmental Area have gradually been bought and sold for residential use. Land is available throughout the entire neighborhood. Owners will need to install a well and septic system. Established residences, often ranch styles from the 1990s until 2023, are scattered throughout. Most have rustic, Spanish features like red tile roofs, stucco and an emphasis on arched shaded front entryways, windows and porches. Due to Florida's tropical climate, properties often have to extend living space outdoors with courtyards, patios and Florida rooms. Generally, the price range for homes is between $180,000 and $340,000. However, those tucked into the canals of Grassy Lake can cost between $380,000 and $360,000. Sun Lakes is a community organization and not affiliated with a homeowners association.

Golfing, boating and pickleball
Sun Lakes is a part of the Special Benefit District, which requires residents to pay a modest annual fee per property to support the community park and amenities. The park is strictly reserved for residents and guests and can only be accessed by an assigned gate card. It includes a sandy beach, boat ramp and lake docks. A playground, pickleball and shuffleboard courts and a soccer field are also available to Sun Lakes residents. Several scenic fairways at the sprawling Placid Lakes Golf Course are within 7 miles, and the Archbold Biological Station offers interactive experiences, like handling reptiles and guided educational walks. The Lake Placid Local Sugar Express Train offers two to six-hour rides from Lake Placid to the expansive Lake Okeechobee. These rides are especially popular during seasonal events and festivals in Lake Placid, Sebring and Clewiston.

Retailers and restaurants in South Highlands Shopping Center
Household needs can be found at Winn-Dixie and Dollar General, conveniently within 3 miles. Sun N Lake Boulevard meshes with U.S. Highway 27, where almost all of the area's retail and restaurant scenes are located and major grocers at South Highlands Shopping Center, 6 miles away. The highway offers fast-food and chain restaurants such as GC Grill House by Golden Corral. Restaurants along the aptly named Lake June Road are Dock 633 and Jaxson's, home of the Hookiemelt: an interesting appetizer of gator or chicken covered in sour cream and wing sauce. Downtown Lake Placid, also 6 miles north, is home to boutique stores and locally owned restaurants. Over 50 vibrant murals decorate businesses on Interlake Boulevard and Main Avenue, including The Blueberry Patch and several locally owned restaurants like Morty & Edna's Craft Kitchen. Lake Placid Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning next door. While there are plenty of small businesses to support, the area needs brand-name retail options. Lakeshore Mall is the closest shopping center for department stores, but most of its retailers have closed since COVID-19. Therefore, residents might have to drive to Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales, 51 miles north, for stores like Dillard's.

USA Today has voted it North America's Number 1 Motorsports event, and it attracts visitors from all over the globe.

Important things to know
While Lake Placid is not immune from Florida's hurricane season, its location in the middle of the state might not be hit as hard as coastal cities like Tampa or Fort Myers. Additionally, the citrus industry has been severely impacted by Greening. This bacterial infection can kill a citrus tree within a few years. There is currently no cure. "Our citrus industry isn't what it once was," Dibble says.
