Lake Worth’s bohemian, artistic community

The greater city of Lake Worth Beach is home to six historic districts, two of which overlap in Parrot Cove. Between Lucerne’s Old and North East Historic Districts, residents can bask in the array of pastel paint jobs and lush greenery that bring this colorful neighborhood to life. “Lake Worth has always been known for its artistic community,” says Ellen Negley, a local watercolor artist. “It has this bohemian feel with historic cottages, and it’s close to the beach. It’s easy to integrate into the arts here.” From home and garden tours to elevated street food and a massive coastal golf course next door, Parrot Cove’s residents are conveniently positioned to enjoy all that Lake Worth and West Palm Beach have to offer.

Golfing beside the scenic Lake Worth Lagoon

The Lake Worth Beach Golf Club hugs Parrot Cove along the coast, overlooking the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. The public, 18-hole course is accompanied by a pro shop and clubhouse restaurant. Visitors are welcome to play by the round or purchase a membership. The waterway itself is a popular spot for fishing, home to all kinds of native wildlife like manatees, dolphins and ospreys. Those looking to appreciate Lake Worth Lagoon’s natural beauty can visit the Snook Islands Natural Area, a 118-acre wetland restoration just off the coast of Parrot Cove. Folks can wander the boardwalk, launch a kayak or simply stroll along the sandy shore, as the beach is less than 2 miles away.

Backyard pools and colorful shutters in Parrot Cove

South Florida’s tropical flora surrounds Parrot Cove’s coastal homes. These grid-like residential streets are lined with a variety of beachy properties, from small cottages to Mission Revivals and modern, Tudor-inspired homes. The community is generally more expensive than its surrounding neighborhoods in Lake Worth Beach, thanks to its proximity to the lagoon and, across the waterway, Palm Beach. Many of Lake Worth’s larger properties are also located in Parrot Cove, inching beyond $1 million closer to the golf course. Even small, historic cottages are priced between $650,000 and $800,000, many with backyard pools and colorful shutters. The occasional condo or townhouse will likely go for $300,000 to $400,000.

Lake Worth's vibrant annual events

Each year, friendly residents invite visitors to hop on a vintage trolley for a tour of the neighborhood’s historic homes. Known as the Parrot Cove Home and Garden Tour, the event features native plant gardens, ornately designed landscaping and original 1940s interior features found in many of Parrot Cove’s homes. “We have Taste of Lake Worth, a big annual Pride event every year, and even a raft race,” Negley explains. She even encourages folks to check out the annual Street Painting Festival, featuring hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors. Across the waterway, residents can look forward to some of Palm Beach’s most popular annual events, including the Food & Wine Festival and Sweet Corn Fiesta. In the spring, however, locals and out-of-towners alike flock to West Palm Beach’s SunFest for a vibrant display of art, music and street food.

Pastries, coffee and elevated street food

Both Lake Avenue and Lake Worth Road serve as the area’s primary thoroughfares, lined with shopping and dining options. Heading west into the heart of Lake Worth, residents can stop at Delicias Cuban Bakery for traditional Latin pastries and coffee, or stop by Lilo’s Streetfood and Bar for fresh, globally-inspired cuisine under the glow of the patio’s string lights. As for groceries and other provisions, folks can find a Publix off State Route 1 in Mango Groves, as well as Winn-Dixie just a mile or so north. “I recently painted Benny’s on the Beach, a restaurant right next to the Lake Worth Pier,” Negley says. “It’s pretty famous around here; we have a lot of locals and tourists that love to visit.”
