Lake Bonnet
Ranch-style homes from the 1960s to the ‘80s
The up to three-bedroom ranch-style homes here were built between the 1960s through the ‘80s; many sit on up to quarter-acre lots and average $250,000. Concrete driveways with room for up to two cars lead to attached carports; residents also park cars in their front yards. Metal and wooden fences enclose front and back yards and are also used to separate homes; foundations feature mulch-packed areas edged with stone. Residents walk and bike along streets and sidewalks under the shade of mature oak, pine and palm trees draped with Spanish moss.Learn from professional stylists and personal shoppers
Kids may attend Polk County district schools like Lincoln Avenue Academy Elementary and Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, both earning an A-minus from Niche. At B-plus Lakeland Senior High, students can enroll in the Fashion Academy where they’ll design clothing patterns and learn from stylists and personal shoppers.A canopy walkway and children’s museum
On the eastern side of the neighborhood, residents jog, bike or skate the 2-mile paved trail around the 168-acre Bonnet Springs Park; they can learn about the area’s history at the welcome center, explore the butterfly house in the botanical garden and stroll across a wooden canopy walkway among mature oak trees. Kids enjoy swinging on the playground or climbing in and out of an orange and blue model train; couples exchange vows at the event center or rent out the boathouse for private parties. On the northeastern edge of the park, kids explore St. Christopher’s Project City Play, an exhibit at the Florida Children’s Museum that lets them explore careers like firefighting within the child-sized version of a real city. “Families walk from their homes to Bonnet Springs to have fun and to connect with each other and nature; it really is special and just what the neighborhood needed,” says Wilson.
Smoked pork and Cuban sandwiches
Decorated with lime green walls and bronze stars, Costilla Grill Mexican Restaurant serves Nacho al Pastor, a combination of dried chiles, pineapple and smoked pork layered on top of tortilla chips; locals sit at the bar to watch a soccer match while enjoying a beer. Three miles south along Central Avenue, residents order roast pork and ham Cuban sandwiches, along with deviled crabs and black beans and rice at Ybors Cuban Cafe; with dark blue walls and four-chair tables spaced closely together, many dine in for lunch or order carryout. Most shopping takes place outside of the neighborhood: Super Choice Foods is 2 miles northeast, while 5 miles north at the Lakeland Square Mall, locals can hit up department stores like JCPenney.
Cars, buses and paratransit
Residents rely on their cars to get around or use Lakeland’s Citrus Connection for public transportation; services include fixed bus routes and door-to-door paratransit for those with disabilities. Locals can also bike into downtown Lakeland; Watson Clinic Hospitalists is a 3-mile trip, and the Lakeland Linder International Airport is 6 miles south.
