Lake Somerset

Open midcentury ranch-styles and condos
“The homes here tend to be a little older than in other Lakeland neighborhoods, so they’re often very open and built around the living area,” Muzzy says. Most are midcentury ranch-styles and split-levels, with paved driveways and fenced back yards; these range from $185,000 for a three-bed, one-bath and go up to $560,000 for a four-bed, three-bath with an enclosed pool. Homes closer to Lakes Somerset and John stand on winding, sidewalk-free roads; those north of the lakes are laid out on blocks, with Glendale Street’s broad sidewalks connecting them. A village of stucco, two-story condos built in the 1970s also sits directly beside Lake Somerset; these homes average $232,000 for a three-bed, three-bath with a detached garage.Lakeland Senior High’s back-to-back champs
Lake Somerset lies in Polk County, which allows parents to select the schools their children attend. Local kids might attend Cleveland Court Elementary, which receives a B-plus from Niche, then continue to C-plus-rated Southwest Middle, which expects to finish construction of its new campus in 2024. At the B-plus-rated Lakeland Senior High, the football and cheerleading teams were back-to-back state champs in 2022 and ‘23.Cleveland Heights and Three Parks Trail
Immediately west of Lake Somerset is the public Cleveland Heights Golf Course, with three nine-hole courses named for the pink flowers that grow there: azaleas, bougainvilleas and camellias. The paved 4-mile Three Parks Trail “runs around the golf course and connects people to other parks,” Muzzy says. “Folks really like walking their dogs and riding their bikes there.” Connected to the trail, Woodlake Park, is home to eight hard tennis courts and six pickleball courts, all lit at night. Across the street from Lake Somerset, the 353-acre Holloway Park offers grassy running trails that range from 3 to 10 kilometers in length; at the bird sanctuary here, birdwatchers can find barred owls, pileated woodpeckers and more.Saturday means Lakeland Downtown Farmers Market
The Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market brings locals to North Kentucky Avenue every Saturday morning. The market’s dozens of vendors include the local Red Swan Shop, who makes quirky lapel pins, and the Crepe Company, who offers Nutella-filled crepes and more. The Lakeland Downtown Development Authority started the event to encourage a community-centered culture in the city.Edgewood Avenue and Lakeland Marketplace
Retailers and restaurants are scattered among the homes along Edgewood Avenue. At locally owned Gigi’s Oriental Market, shoppers will find East Asian snacks, appliances and meals. White-linen-covered tables fill family owned Scarpa’s Italian, where diners can enjoy penne and fresh Gulf shrimp in authentic vodka sauce. For a more low-key dining experience, Jessie’s Gourmet Sandwich Cafe offers chicken pesto on toasted ciabatta bread, which can be enjoyed on the outdoor benches. Lakeland Marketplace includes chain retailers and eateries like Lowe’s, Sam’s Club and pizza spot Mellow Mushroom.
State Road 570 and Citrus Connection
State Road 570 runs along Lake Somerset’s southern edge; it’s a 38-mile commute to Tampa and 60 miles to Orlando. Though the neighborhood is largely car-bound, the Citrus Connection bus stops along Edgewood Avenue can make the 4-mile trip to downtown Lakeland easier. Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center is the nearest hospital 5 miles north, and Lakeland Linder Interational, the closest airport, is a 7-mile drive to the west.Three Parks Trail Master Plan
Lake Somerset is set within the Three Parks Trail Master Plan, which will connect locals to the Cleveland Heights neighborhood once completed in 2024. The completed trail will run around the perimeter of the Cleveland Heights Golf Course by the Common Ground, through Curtis Peterson Park to the south and past Woodlake Park. Sidewalks and dirt paths have and will continue to be converted into pave trail space to complete the master plan.
