Robson Street is a well-established Lakeland neighborhood with affordable homes
Robson Street is a small, well-established residential neighborhood along the Interstate 4 corridor on the north side of Lakeland. With the community tucked between U.S. Highway 98, the city’s primary commercial corridor, and I-4, residents are conveniently connected to local shopping, dining and attractions, as well as larger statewide destinations such as Tampa. “It’s not a bad area, but it’s not upscale,” says Steve Strickland of RE/MAX Experts, who has sold homes in the neighborhood and adds that affordability is the main draw for potential homebuyers. “You’ve got a lot of average-income and retirement-income homeowners.”
Older homes and new construction priced between the mid-100,000s and low 300,000s
The community’s mostly older housing stock features midcentury designs built in the 1950s and 1960s. But new homes have started popping up in recent years. Older homes offer more spacious lots, and several have been renovated. Newer homes offer more cozy confines, but the lots are still around a quarter-acre. Some of the contemporary designs offer features such as attached garages that the older homes do not. All the homes are free of HOA restrictions. Townhouses also can be found. Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the low $300,000s, well below the Florida median. Flooding is not a factor in Central Florida, but wind damage remains a risk during hurricane season, which runs from June through November.
North Lakeland Elementary is in the neighborhood
Students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade don’t have to leave the neighborhood to attend school. North Lakeland Elementary, which earns a C from Niche, is located on the community’s south side just off the street for which the neighborhood is named. Sleepy Hill Middle is also a C-rated school. Lake Gibson Senior High, a B-rated school, features academy programs in subjects that include education, finance and business and technology.
Stores and restaurants nearby along U.S. Highway 98
Big-box retailers and restaurants are concentrated along U.S. Highway 98 just minutes from the neighborhood. “It’s very accessible,” Strickland says. “You’re not far from the Lakeland Mall and a lot of things on the north side.” Target, Lowe’s, T.J. Maxx and Bealls are among an array of shopping options. The Lakeland Antique Mall, which features more than 100 vendors, is also nearby. Diverse dining destinations range from Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux to BubbaQue’s BBQ, a small, folksy local chain. Gordon Food Service Store is the closest grocer. Contemporary dining and entertainment options can be found about 5 miles away in downtown Lakeland.
Close to Lake Parker, the largest in the city
Lake Parker Park is an amenities-filled, waterfront green space less than 2 miles away. It features easy access to boating and fishing on the city’s largest lake. Other amenities of note include a walking/fitness trail, a disc golf course and several athletic courts for everything from shuffleboard to volleyball to tennis and pickleball. The park is also home to a popular playground for young children anchored by its pirate ship. Nearby Joker Marchand Stadium is a city institution that is the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers. The Lakeland Flying Tigers, the MLB club’s Single-A affiliate, plays there during the summer. Tickets are as low as $6.
Hospital is nearby; Tampa is easily accessible
U.S. Highway 98 becomes Florida Avenue just outside the neighborhood and leads directly to Lakeland Regional Medical Center a mere 2 miles away. Buses that run regularly along Florida Avenue provide public transportation to the hospital and other points of interest, including downtown. I-4 provides quick access to Lakeland Linder International Airport about 10 miles away. Tampa is 35 miles west via the interstate.
