Aptly named Lakeview is close-knit and close to nature
Lakeview is a small, close-knit suburban community where knowing your neighbor and their family is the norm. “It has a lot of working families and residents who have been there for generations,” says Eileen O’Hara, an associate real estate broker at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Outdoor living is a cornerstone for many in Lakeview, which is named for its proximity to Hempstead Lake in Hempstead Lake State Park. Residents often go to the park to kayak, fish, picnic, walk or run around the lake and play a range of sports. “They’ve just spent a lot of money renovating certain areas of it and adding walking trails,” O’Hara says. “It’s a nice surprise in the middle of Nassau County. It’s beautiful.” The playground and Environmental Education and Resiliency Center, which regularly holds fun, hands-on educational activities for children, also make it a popular spot for parents to bring their children.
A competitive market above the national median
The homes in Lakeview are relatively affordable for Nassau County, generally starting in the low $500,000s and moving up into the $700,000s. The median single-family home price is about $690,000, higher than the national median of about $420,000. Just like the surrounding areas, there’s very little inventory in Lakeview. “Things have been selling — and selling relatively quickly — when they do come on the market,” O’Hara says. As a result, prospective homebuyers interested in putting down roots in Lakeview should expect some competition when it’s time to secure their new home.
Malverne High is national recognized
Although Lakeview ZIP codes are either located in Rockville Centre or West Hempstead, children in Lakeview attend schools in the Malverne Union Free School District. The district has an A rating on Niche, making it a draw for parents. Children attend Maurice W. Downing Primary School from kindergarten through second grade before finishing their elementary education at Davison Avenue Intermediate School. They’ll then move on to Howard T. Herber Middle School and, once they reach ninth grade, Malverne High School, named a U.S. High School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
Harold Walker Memorial Park has a seasonal pool
Hempstead Lake Park is the biggest park in Lakeview, but the community is dotted with recreation spaces. Aside from the state park, Harold Walker Memorial Park is the most popular. Residents go there throughout the year to play basketball and baseball, but park traffic peaks in summer when the pool opens.
Shopping in West Hempstead or Malverne
When residents need to go shopping or want to eat out, they often travel a mile or so into neighboring West Hempstead or Malverne. Lakeview Station provides easy access to New York City. When combined with Lakeview’s proximity to the Southern State Parkway and John F. Kennedy International Airport, the latter of which is just over 11 miles away, it’s easy to get just about anywhere.
