North Alameda
Belmar, an exciting new Lakewood downtown
Shoppers can walk across Alameda Avenue to Belmar, a walkable retail district with 22 city blocks of local businesses, eateries and name-brand boutiques in brownstone storefronts. Residents can lace up the skates at Roller City or see a flick at Cinemark Century Bel Mar. This is a vital part of Lakewood’s downtown scene. “There wasn’t ever a central downtown. So Lakewood recently has built this Belmar area, and they try to build the community up around that area,” says D D Rockwell, an area local and Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in Denver. “It feels like an old downtown. That’s where they’ve fabricated the core of the city.”North Alameda’s western border is Wadsworth Boulevard, which offers an extravagant retail and entertainment scene with three primary shopping centers. The Alameda Crossing shopping center, in the neighborhood’s southeast corner, offers ethnic cuisines and groceries like Viet Hoa Supermarket. The Fairfield Commons houses shops, businesses and restaurants dispersed around the intersection of Wadsworth and West First Avenue. Residents can pick up groceries at Sprouts Farmers Market in the Fairfield Commons or Whole Foods Market in Belmar, both on Wadsworth Boulevard. Breakfast is served at the Lookin Good Restaurant and Lounge, which has Greek and Mexican specialties in an Elvis-themed diner that has been open for over 40 years. There’s no better place to hang out on a Friday night than Rock Wood Fired Pizza, a bar with microbrews, rock music and brick-oven pies. Visitors of the Lakewood City Commons can watch a theater production at the Lakewood Cultural Center, further south on Wadsworth Boulevard, shop at box stores like Old Navy or pick up groceries at King Soopers.
