Farmdale
Amish-owned farmstands and markets
Two miles west along Marietta Avenue, Rolling Gardens Farm Market is just one of many Amish-owned farm markets that offer fresh produce, homemade baked goods and a wide assortment of preserves and jams. “People do choose to shop locally. I’ve lived here my whole life and seen the same farmstands open for decades,” Helsel says. Forry’s Country Store is another favorite market that offers produce in addition to fresh deli meats, cheeses and pretzel roll sandwiches. “Even as the area has grown, it hasn’t lost its sense of tradition and history,” Helsel says. “They still have their handwritten $1 tomatoes for sale and a box to drop your money in. No Apple Pay, no commercialization.” Four miles east are traditional grocers like Giant and Weis Markets. In Downtown Lancaster, Park City Center is the area’s only shopping mall, and The Shoppes at Belmont features big-box stores like Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Along Habecker Road, Creekside Café serves a menu of sandwiches, soups and salads in a cozy atmosphere. Trio Bar & Grill is another favorite for happy hours on the patio and traditional American fare.Afternoons at Lake Grubb Nature Park
Bridge Valley Park is in the heart of the neighborhood, offering an open green space within walking distance for most Farmdale residents. This 3.5-acre park features a small playground with swing sets, picnic tables and a basketball court where kids can practice their layup. The Hempfield recCenter is a quick drive away, offering amenities like an indoor pool, tennis courts and a fitness center. The nearby Lake Grubb Nature Park offers scenic afternoons for anglers and walks with the family dog. More trails that wind along the Susquehanna River await in nearby Columbia, 4 miles southwest. “Farmdale is nice because you’re still 15 minutes from the city, but you’re also close to the river’s hiking trails and great smallmouth bass fishing,” says Tyler Stoltz, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty, who has over seven years of experience in the industry. “And the Northwest River Trail is a 14-mile paved path popular for bikers and walkers.” For a different kind of green, Farmdale is about equidistance from Highlands of Donegal, a members-only golf course, and the public Four Seasons Golf Club. With landscapes that range from flatlands to mountain ranges, locals are also less than an hour from Roundtop Mountain Resort for ski trips.Stand-alone homes and townhouses
Farmdale residents can enjoy quiet drives along country roads, passing acres of farmland and the occasional home. Winding residential streets feature various architectural styles, including bi-levels, colonials, ranch-style houses and the occasional historic stone farmhouse. Backyards are large enough for an extra storage shed and patios, and attached garages are standard. With lot sizes that average around a quarter-acre to an acre with tidy landscaping, prices typically range from the mid $200,000s to the mid $500,000s. According to Coyle, inventory is low, and house demand is high. Townhouse communities with attached garages priced from the mid $200,000s to the mid $400,000s are also available. Like most properties near waterways, the nearby Chiques Creek is prone to flooding.Highly rated Hempfield School District
The Hempfield School District serves the community and earns an overall A-minus grade on Niche. Students may attend A-minus-rated schools like Farmdale Elementary, Landisville Middle and Hempfield High. The latter offers many Advanced Placement courses, dozens of clubs and sports teams. In 2023, Hempfield’s competitive cheerleading team won a first-place varsity national championship for the first time in school’s history. Small schools like Millersville University and Elizabethtown College are scattered around the county, and less than 10 miles away, Downtown Lancaster is home to private institutions like Franklin & Marshall College and Lancaster Bible College.Summer concerts and seasonal pickings
Autumn’s arrival brings with it a range of festivities. “Lancaster has a lot of farms that offer family-friendly activities,” Helsel says. Residents are just a short drive from apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and even cut-your-own flowers. The Hot Air Balloon Festival in Lancaster is another popular event in September. Nissley Vineyards attracts summer crowds during Summerfest, an outdoor concert series that runs through July and August. Closer to home, Long’s Park Amphitheater also hosts free outdoor concerts on Sunday evenings throughout the summer.Marietta Avenue to Downtown Lancaster
Farmdale’s rural atmosphere makes it a car-dependent community. However, Amtrak stations are in Mount Joy and Downtown Lancaster. Marietta Avenue is the main thoroughfare, which leads 9 miles east to downtown or 6 miles to Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center. Other nearby roads include Highway 30 and Interstates 76 and 83. Harrisburg International Airport is about 25 miles away and offers nonstop flights to 16 U.S. cities. However, due to its limited flight schedule, locals around the region may also fly out of Philadelphia, 90 miles away, and Baltimore, 80 miles away.Houses of worship around Farmdale
Lancaster County is home to many houses of worship, although churches outnumber other religious institutions. Newtown United Methodist Church, Lwe Ethiopian Church and Chinese Bible Church of Lancaster are all within a 3-mile radius of Farmdale. However, synagogues, Islamic Centers and even Hindu temples are scattered throughout Downtown Lancaster.
