Southside Lancaster is close to the river and the city's center
Southside Lancaster is a mile-long urban section of the city that leads from downtown to the Conestoga River, boasting a myriad of homes from the late-19th and early 20th centuries. While no more than a mile drive from Downtown Lancaster, Southside is close to everything the city has to offer.
Red brick and painted facades reflect Southside’s history
The vast majority of homes can be found along South Prince, Beaver and South Queen Streets, which run parallel before South Prince and South Queen merge at the river to become U.S. Route 222. The northern section of Southside features mostly colonial-style and Second Empire row homes built in the late 1800s. The original red brick captures the essence of that time period, while others are painted over with bright colors. Nineteenth-century homes with newly renovated interiors sell for around $200,000 to $225,000. Homes in need of renovations go for around $150,000 or less. Most of these homes are lined up against the sidewalk and have small, narrow backyards. Further south, there's a mix of row houses, duplexes and single-family homes with more front and backyard space. Most of these homes were built in the early 1900s, selling for around $200,000 to $275,000.
Elementary and middle schools vary by location
Students in the northern section of Southside attend Carter & Macrae Elementary School and Reynolds Middle School. Those in the southern section go to Price Elementary School and Jackson Middle School. All eventually finish their degrees at McCaskey High School, which has a B- rating from Niche, offering the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Those seeking post-secondary education can stay in the neighborhood by attending Millersville University, about three miles away. “The location is popular for people who need to be near the college,” says Susan Allison, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, “Whether it be university professionals or students.”
Central Park offers trails, playgrounds and a sensory garden
To escape the city, cross the Strawberry Street Bridge over the Conestoga River right into the 544-acre oasis of Lancaster County Central Park. Go hiking, biking or horseback riding through miles of woodsy trails or take a relaxing stroll by the flowers and water fountain at the Garden of Five Senses. The park has a playground and lots of open green space for kids to run around and play on. They’ll also have fun going down the water slides in the community pool, perfect for cooling off on those hot summer days. There’s another pool at Culliton Park, a more urban space with basketball courts and a playground with a padded surface.
Puerto Rican sandwiches and pizza are neighborhood staples
Most of the neighborhood’s local businesses are merged with homes on South Prince and South Queen Streets. For a quick grocery trip, walk to one of the several mini markets like J&C Grocery and Andromeda Grocery Store. On the north side, closer to downtown, there's a ShopRite for a broader range of products. Torres Family Bakery is a popular small shop offering yummy Puerto Rican sandwiches and baked goods. Dominion Pizza has Italian-American comfort foods like pizza, cheesesteaks and wings. Dirty Ol’ Tavern is a lively dive bar with live music, karaoke and a picnic table right by the Conestoga River.
