Langston is rich in history and community
Many Oklahoma towns trace their origins back to the land runs, when settlers raced to stake their claim on unassigned land. The city of Langston was one of the few areas established as a Black settlement during the Land Run of 1889. Today, Langston is home to Oklahoma’s only historically Black university and a community of residents who look after one another. Alberta Mayberry is an active community member who supports fellow Langston residents through local nonprofit organizations and volunteer work. “I came here in 1987 and worked as the library director for the university,” Mayberry says. “I fell in love with the community. We are all in for our town. People get involved, and they take action. We have the Stork’s Nest to support parents, because moms and dads need help sometimes. There are lots of little things like that. I do what I can for students and faculty.”
Athletes make history at LU
Langston University was established here in 1897, and Niche gives the school a C-plus. Football, basketball and marching band are among LU’s most popular programs. The women’s basketball team made history in 2025 as the first HBCU team to win the Sooner Athletic Conference season championship. The men’s team had a similar record-setting success in 2024 and were runners-up in the 2025 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship. Young Langston residents attend Coyle Public Schools. Coyle Elementary School gets a C-plus, while Coyle High School earns a B.
Lower home prices and new development
“Most people who move here have a connection to the school, or they move in for family reasons, like to take care of their grandparents,” says Mayberry. “People who aren’t connected that way move in because they want a semi-quiet area and a home that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.” There are manufactured and ranch-style homes closer to the university that range from $100,000 to $237,000. New homes are being built along state Highway 33, closer to Guthrie. Mayberry said she hopes construction will continue to spread east to central Langston to grow the community. The new contemporary Craftsman homes often range between $335,000 and $450,000. Throughout Langston, properties feature large lots with plenty of breathing room between homes.
A park dedicated to honoring local veterans
The Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Gardens was created as a space to honor and remember military members. Dog tags hang on the chain link fence, and flags for each military branch fly near the entrance. Mayberry helps organize the annual Memorial Day event at the gardens, which includes moments like lowering the flags to half staff, playing taps and reading “A Memorial Day Salute” by Rita Graham. “We mourn the loss of those who didn’t come home, and we thank those who returned for their service,” she says. “We look for anyone who was wounded in battle and Purple Heart recipients to acknowledge them and give them a plaque.” T.G. Green Park is the main park in town, with a softball field, playground and basketball court. The Langston City Fire Station is down the street, and there’s a community garden behind the softball outfield. Lake Langston is a fishing and kayaking destination, but some residents visit to picnic near the water.
Taking Highway 33 to Guthrie or Stillwater
The residential streets in Langston are sidewalk-free, and many don’t have pavement markings. Commuters usually take Highway 33 to drive about 11 miles west to Guthrie or roughly 22 miles east to Stillwater, home to Oklahoma State University. The Stillwater Regional Airport offers nonstop flights to the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The area has five churches, including the Church of the Living God and New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Mayberry also says the university has two student-based religious centers: the Westley Foundation and the Baptist Collegiate Ministry.
Local shopping options with more in nearby cities
Residents can shop at the Dollar General off Highway 33, but the nearest grocery store is the Walmart Supercenter in Guthrie. Dunagan-Farms is a first-generation beef farm that sells farm-raised beef, eggs and locally sourced products in the farm’s store. Tevin's Home Cooking is the main restaurant in town, serving classics like hamburgers, pork chops and fried chicken. When locals head to Stillwater for an OSU game, they might catch up at Eskimo Joe’s, a burger destination and bar neighboring OSU’s campus. Guthrie has popular locally owned restaurants, including Stables Cafe and Gages Steakhouse.
Low crime rates and Oklahoma weather patterns
The CAP Index Crime Score for Langston is 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4. Langston has police and volunteer fire departments, while Langston University manages its own police force. Langston, like most towns in Oklahoma, may experience severe weather. Tornadoes might pass through the area, but Langston has two tornado sirens on the university’s campus and one by T. G. Green Park to warn any residents outside about impending weather. Storms can come with hail, and summers are often dry and hot. Snow and below-freezing temperatures are common in the winter.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
