Forest View
Suburban Neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan
Ingham County 48910
Low-slung condos on large lots
Forest View is made up of winding roads and quiet cul-de-sacs, with a notable number of duplexes. About half of the low-slung ranchers and split-level homes here are split into two units, sometimes with separate garages. Fixer-upper single-family homes start at around $75,000, and prices get up to $150,000 for renovated condo units. Newly renovated properties that could be rented as two units or used as one single-family home can reach $250,000. Yards are an average of a 1/4 acre, though they are often split between the two condo units. The forests of Forest View
Forest View is surrounded by green space, with the most prominent attraction being Hawk Island Park. This 100-acre park has a central lake for swimming or fishing in the summer and hills for snow tubing in the winter. There’s a small admission fee to get in, but most visitors don’t mind paying a few dollars for access to the sandy shorelines, winding trails and summertime splash pad. The next-door Soldan Dog Park is an off-leash spot for four-legged residents. Other parks include Scott Woods, a less developed nature space with trails that wind up toward Potter Park Zoo. The neighborhood's trails directly connect to the paved Lansing River Trail, which winds up through most major Lansing attractions.Private and public schools with an outdoor education focus
Kids here are zoned for Lansing Public Schools, which has open-choice enrollment. Many parents start their kids at Forest View Elementary School since it is within walking distance. The school serves kindergarten through third grade and is an environmental science magnet. Kids enjoy Outdoor Education Field Trips, including visits to Fenner Nature Center and MSU Collaborative Classrooms. Niche rates Forest View C-plus. From there, kids can move on to Attwood School, rated C-minus, for grades four through eighth, and then Everett High School, rated C-plus. And for a faith-based option, Lansing Christian School is around 2 miles away. Students from preschool through high school can benefit from Lansing Christian's outdoor learning initiative, which offers students an outdoor classroom space, walking trails, and a playground made from felled trees and recycled materials.Events at Fenner Nature Center
A mile north of Forest View, Fenner Nature Center offers even more opportunities for nature lovers, with a trail system for hiking in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter. The center hosts preschool classes, summer camps and annual events, including a Maple Syrup Festival and Apple Butter Festival. With a network of dedicated volunteers and visitors, the free park unites a community with a shared love of the outdoors. “It’s a great place for walking and learning about nature,” says Tina Nguyen, the marketing & membership manager with Fenner. “But more than that, it’s a community epicenter. We have school trips come through, local businesses get involved and we have a lot of people who love to volunteer. Maybe it belongs to somebody on paper, but really, the center belongs to everybody who visits.”Commutes to downtown, MSU, and McLaren Hospital
Residents aren’t far from Interstate 496 and North Aurelius Road, making commuting downtown and over toward MSU easy. There's also a reliable bus network that runs through the neighborhood, and when the weather is nice, the paved Lansing River Trail connects 4 miles into downtown Lansing, a 25-minute trip. McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital also sits just across the Interstate from Forest View, so the neighborhood is popular with healthcare professionals.Rustic dining and international grocery options
Residents typically travel toward downtown Lansing or East Lansing for dining and shopping. One of the only options close to home is Leo’s Lodge, a comfortable pub and restaurant with a rustic interior and deer mounts. There’s a Family Dollar within the neighborhood for essentials, but residents head over to Edgewood Towne Center, 3 miles away, for most grocery runs. The center has a Target, Meijer, and other chain stores and restaurants. There are also a few nearby international stores, like International Market One and International Food Mart.
