A relatively affordable suburb with access to employment
Nestled along the Grand River, Knollwood Willow is a turn-of-the-century Lansing suburb with access to public transportation, parks and employment. “It’s close to industry, and there are a lot of people who work at General Motors and the multiple insurance companies in Lansing,” says Realtor Stacee Robison, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Realty. National insurance companies like Auto-Owners Insurance and Jackson National Life are headquartered in Lansing. One of Knollwood Willow’s major appeals is its relatively affordable houses, which are priced at roughly half of Lansing’s median home price.

The neighborhood’s streets are lined with sidewalks, which are about 10 to 15 feet from the front porches. Many of the backyards have detached garages and are enclosed by wood or chain link fences. Most of the houses were built between the 1880s and the 1940s and are priced from $30,000 to $140,000. Styles include bungalows, shotgun styles and two-story wood frame houses. “These are older homes, so a lot of them require repairs,” Robison says.

Because of the Lansing School District’s school choice policy, parents must apply for their children to attend any school, and they are encouraged to choose the school closest to their home. Willow School is a public elementary school on the neighborhood’s southwest corner that has a C-minus Niche rating.
Less than 2 miles southwest, J.W. Sexton High School educates grades 7 through 12 and has a C Niche rating. The school has a chapter in the International Thespian Society, a national organization of actors that includes alums such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Val Kilmer and Tom Hanks.
Each year, the Lansing Center holds its Thespian Festival, which has multiple shows, over 50 workshops and college scholarship auditions.
The Lansing River Trail and other public parks
Within Knollwood Willow, Edmore Park has a playground and an open-air shelter. Just north of the river, Dietrich Park has a grilling area and access to Lansing River Trail, a paved 20-mile pathway. The trail connects to Turner-Dodge Park, home to the Turner-Dodge House, a historic mansion that was built in 1855. For Grand River paddlers and anglers, Edmore Park has a canoe launch. “Over the last 20 years, the river has gotten much cleaner because of cleanup efforts,” Robison says. Three blocks west of Knollwood Willow, Bassett Park has open sports fields and a bandstand.

Casual dining at Olympic Broil and Hank's Cuisine
Several restaurants are within walking distance of the residential blocks. Olympic Broil is an old-fashioned spot where patrons order burgers and cheese fries that are advertised on a board above the counter. The Capitol City Old Car Club often meets at the diner on weekends. China Palace Restaurant is a popular takeout spot. Hank’s Cuisines is a shoebox-shaped cinderblock diner that serves classic American fare like shrimp and grits, fried chicken and fried fish platters. A Family Dollar is on the southwest corner of the neighborhood. Handy’s Food Market sells Mexican groceries on the neighborhood’s south end, and Gorman’s Food Market is just north of Grand River.
