In Potter Walsh, a walk to the park takes you past lions, tigers and bongos. Outside of the zoo is a tight-knit neighborhood full of established homes and eastside pride. Potter Walsh is home to riverside trails, a community park, competitively priced homes, and possibly your new neighbors.
“Most of the homes in the area are simple ranches and two stories,” says Richard Child, a Realtor with NextHome Reality. Laid-back ranch-style homes, charming bungalows and efficient Minimal Traditional cottages are all in a central location in the greater Lansing area and feature a competitive price range. A few American Foursquares offer more space for homeowners. Houses in the neighborhood are priced between $50,000 and $200,000 but are “generally below $100,000,” Child says.
A membership to the Potter Park Zoo could mean daily wildlife experiences just down the street. The AZA-accredited zoo not only puts on seasonal events and supports conservation efforts but provides year-round educational programming for high school students to learn about veterinary science and animal health. Walsh Park is your classic neighborhood park with a playground, basketball courts and plenty of dog-walking space. Take a dive into Hunter Park Pool, which greets summertime visitors with spray fountains and a separate splash pad area for children to play.
Cycle, hike, rollerblade or otherwise enjoy the Lansing River Trail, a paved pathway that runs along the Red Cedar River and spans over 20 miles of the greater Lansing area. The trail wanders along the banks of the river before heading downtown to the west. You can also take the trail to Crego Park, offering 200 acres of wooded walkways and serene waterways to explore by kayak.
Lyons Elementary School has small class sizes and big dreams for its students, along with a drama club and choir for extracurricular art experiences. Everett High School is home to the Everett New Tech High School program for students to explore science and technology topics. A strong visual arts department and world language department give students even more options to explore.
After breakfast at the Sunshine Diner, be sure to save room for Eastside Fish Fry and Grill, a local legend where you can buy fresh fish or have them fry up your favorite filets. Other eastside hits include house-made soup at Soup Spoon Café and your favorite morning drink and doughnut pairing at Strange Matter Coffee.
You’ll likely meet several of your new neighbors at a Potter Walsh Neighborhood Association event, whether volunteering in the community garden or attending a neighborhood food drive. The association plays an active and important role in the community as it continues to rebound from hardship faced by the relocation of automotive manufacturing plants and other key employers in the greater Lansing area.
Because of its central location in the greater Lansing area, Potter Walsh makes it, “easy to access job opportunities, restaurants, entertainment, medical care and also education at the main campus of Lansing Community College and MSU (Michigan State University),” Child says. Potter Walsh visitors may only see the zoo, but residents see a community that comes together and celebrates their small-but-mighty neighborhood in Lansing’s eastside.
