Quaint homes at the north edge of Old Town
Turner-Dodge is where the Lansing River Trail starts, and Old Town ends. The neighborhood gets its name from its most notable feature — the 19th-century mansion called the Turner-Dodge House. "I've had neighbors tell me that they moved here because of the house," says Barbara Loyer, the Event Manager with the Turner-Dodge House & Heritage Museum. "Because it's so beautiful, and they love to watch the goings-on. Long-time neighbors make an event of sitting on their porches to watch and enjoy concerts and weddings." More historic sights sit less than a mile away in the commercial center of Old Town. But the quaint streets of Old Town turn into an industrial park to the north, and a railroad running through the neighborhood brings some noise. So, homes a bit further north tend to be more affordable than closer to the city center.

Keeping history alive at the Turner-Dodge House
The community's cornerstone is the Turner-Dodge House, a Gregorian Revival mansion built in 1858 and renovated in 1903 by one of Lansing's most influential families. Today, it is open to the public for tours, school field trips and special events. Among the most popular events are the ballets, the teas and the concerts in the park. The House also holds an annual Fairytale Festival, where it transforms the grounds and home into a colorful wonderland with vendors, dancers and crafts. The home is also available to rent as a retreat space so that visitors can spend an undisturbed day living in the past. "My favorite thing about Turner Dodge is that it's immersive," Loyer says. "People interact with the space and the story of the home much more than they would in a traditional museum."

The grounds of Turner-Dodge connect with a city-wide trail
All of the homes here are within seconds from the Grand River, but only the homes directly around the Turner-Dodge house have direct access to the city-wide Lansing River Trail. The grounds of the Turner-Dodge house are modest but charming, including a rose garden, fountain and trees over 100 years old. The grounds connect directly with the Lansing River Trail, a paved trail that winds south along the waterside to destinations like Old Town and downtown Lansing. It's also lined with art installations as part of the annual ArtPath exhibit that celebrates local work. And when the Michigan winters hit, the nearby Capital City Baseball Kingdon has indoor golf and baseball facilities.

Local restaurants and proximity to Old Town
Right within the neighborhood is Golden Harvest, an iconic Lansing brunch spot not for the faint of heart. Wall-to-wall decorations, including road signs, cuckoo clocks and rainbow stickers, clutter the walls inside, spilling out to adorn the outside. At peak hours, wait times can be over an hour, they don't accept card payments and loud music blares inside. Another popular choice in the area is the locally owned Pizzano's, which mixes Italian, Mexican and American comfort food. And some of the city's best restaurants sit less than a 1/2 mile away in Old Town. "Being close to Old Town is a draw," says Lansing native Brian Ozbun, a Realtor with Bellabay Realty. "It's become a thriving area in the last 10 or 15 years, with shops and restaurants and street dining in the summer."

Historic and midcentury homes along the Grand River
Most of the Turner-Dodge area is industrial, but a few pockets of residential streets hug the banks of the Grand River. Some historic Victorian homes from the early 1900s still remain, complementing the Turner-Dodge house. Most homes were built in the 1950s to 1970s, in Cape Cod, colonial-revival and ranch styles. Older homes have detached garages, and newer homes come with attached garages, but there's also plenty of street parking along the quiet wooded streets. Green grass pushed through cracks in the sidewalk, and homes often have front porches where parents can watch their kids play around a neighborhood basketball hoop. Prices range from $100,000 to $225,000, depending on size and renovations.

Noise from the train and commutes into the city
The train tracks along the neighborhood's north side can create some noise, as can the cars passing along Grand River Avenue. But that major road connects to Gorman's Food Market, less than a mile away, making shopping trips a breeze. The route also heads south to downtown in just 2 miles, and a bus line connects to downtown Lansing in less than 20 minutes. In the other direction, the Capital Region International Airport is also nearby, and it is a 3-mile trip by car or bus.

STEM magnet schools just across the train tracks
Students in Lansing Public Schools have open choices for several pathways of education. Geographically, Gier Park School is the closest option — though the train tracks sit between Turner-Dodge and the school. Gier Park gets a C rating from Niche and serves kindergarten through third grade. From there, kids have several options, with many continuing fourth through eighth grade at Sheridan Road School. The school is a STEM magnet for the district and gets a C rating. Sheridan grads are zoned to take their next steps at Sexton High School, where they can continue a STEM-based education. Sexton gets a C-plus grade. In 2022, the district-wide decision was made to move seventh and eighth graders out of high schools, which is still an ongoing process as of 2024.
