Westside’s collection of historic Lansing homes
“Most of the significant architectural styles of the 20th century are represented here,” says Child. These homes, built between the late 1800s through the 1960s, include many Arts and Crafts homes, from beautiful bungalows to stately two-story houses. A daily drive or evening walk takes residents past Greek Revival columns, spacious front porches and English Cottage Tudor homes, which are “smaller scale versions of English Tudors and feature stucco and half-timbered exterior walls above a brick first floor,” says Child. Well-maintained properties typically include detached garages “because early automobiles often caught fire,” says Child. “Also, lot sizes are too narrow to attach a garage to either side.” House prices in the community start at about $120,000, though “larger homes in excellent condition may sell for $250,000 or more,” says Child.Tending the Letts Park community garden
Letts Community Center is surrounded by a community garden, tennis courts and playground at Letts Park. Locals head to Hillsdale Park for another playground, best accessed by parking on Hillsdale Street. St. Joseph Park sprawls on the west side of the community, offering plenty of space to roam and to hold an event.Getting an education near Westside
Public schools in the area include Riddle Elementary School, which hosts Read to Succeed and other after-school activities for students in the Westside community and earns a C from Niche. Mid-Michigan Leadership Academy serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a D-plus, while J.W. Sexton High School is an early college magnet school specializing in STEM education and earns a C-plus. Students at Montessori Children’s House of Lansing enjoy experiential learning that covers not only the core curriculum but also nature studies, technology, art and more.Visiting Letts Community Center and attending WNA meetings
“The neighborhood is home to the Letts Community Center, which provides children’s programming, a playground and a free meeting space for local clubs and organizations,” Child says. “Firehouse Number 7, a historic fire station, is preserved in roughly its original condition as another highlight of any tour.” The Westside Neighborhood Association hosts annual picnics, parades and garden tours. They encourage residents to connect with their neighbors on Westside Wednesdays and to stay in the know by attending board meetings and provide one source of information on all things Westside in their monthly newsletter.Commuting throughout Lansing and beyond
Interstate 496 slices through the southern portion of the Westside neighborhood, taking residents further into Lansing and to Michigan State University in 5 miles. Locals head just 5 miles north on Martin Luthor King Jr. Boulevard to take flight at Capital Region International Airport. Getting to E.W. Sparrow Hospital means a 2-to-3-mile drive, or Westside locals take the CATA bus from the stop on Verlinden Avenue.Dinner at Harry’s Place
Harry’s Place Bar and Grill is Westside’s local watering hole, proudly serving American fare and drinks in a laid-back, sports bar atmosphere. It’s the chosen spot for “Westside Wednesdays,” where neighbors can take time to connect with each other. Locals enjoy dinner on the patio or watch the Spartans game. They head just north of Westside to find Vietnamese at Capital City Barbecue, as well as massive, Lansing-famous topopo salads at El Azteco. As for groceries, residents head to nearby Waverly and choose from Meijer, Target and ALDI—or make a stop at Sav-Way Food Center, a convenience store in the community.
