Calton Gardens offers suburban convenience off I-35 in north Laredo
Falling just east of Interstate 35, Calton Gardens is a Laredo neighborhood at the gateway to the Gateway City’s northern hubs. “It’s near main highways, main roads, and shopping centers. The mall is two minutes away – you could even go walking to it,” says Angela Montoya, broker owner with Keystone Real Estate Services who’s served the Laredo market for 8 years. “It’s a very convenient location.” While Calton Gardens makes it easy to reach the major destinations of Mall del Norte and Lake Casa Blanca International State Park, it’s also close to the smaller comforts of South Texas suburban life: neighborhood schools, playgrounds surrounded by walking paths and mesquite trees and a library branch that keeps busy with creative community events.
Blocks of suburbia between commercial areas and apartments
Scattered, suburban blocks are tucked behind the retail districts and apartment complexes that line Calton Gardens’ busier thoroughfares. Subdivisions might be dominated by ranch-style houses set behind fences and driveways, manufactured homes or Mission Revival houses in different shapes and sizes. Sidewalks run past front lawns on some streets, shaded by palm and mesquite trees growing from sandy soil. Townhouse and apartment-style condo units with existing residents in place are often marketed to investors. Houses rarely come on the market in Calton Gardens. According to a Homes.com calculation, which uses a combination of estimate data, the average home value in the neighborhood was around $220,000 in late 2025. Thanks to significant investor interest and many larger apartment complexes, most residents rent rather than own their homes.
Magnet programs through the United Independent School District
Calton Gardens is served by the United Independent School District, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Kids may start at B-rated Clark Elementary School within the neighborhood before attending Clark Middle School, which also gets a B. The John B. Alexander High School Ninth Grade Campus is not currently graded by Niche. John B. Alexander High School scores a B-plus. High schoolers can enroll in multiple career clusters to receive specialized vocational training, including a health and sciences magnet program.
Calton Road’s connections to two significant shopping districts
Calton Road travels between the two commercial corridors that frame Calton Gardens to the east and west. H-E-B anchors a strip mall closer to I-35. Other big-box chains, like Walmart and Home Depot, pop up near the interstate within 2 miles of home. Mall del Norte, Laredo’s premier indoor shopping mall, is just north of Calton Gardens. McPherson Road is on the opposite end of the neighborhood. While it leads north to a busier shopping district at its intersection with Del Mar Boulevard, residents can also find familiar chains and locally owned gems on the stretch of road closer to home. “Paulita’s Restaurant is a place for all types of Mexican food, they have really good breakfast tacos and burritos,” Montoya says.
Local playgrounds, indoor recreation and Laredo destination parks
Kids enjoy the shaded playgrounds next to the basketball court at Chaparral Park, surrounded by a short, paved trail. To escape the South Texas heat, adult and youth leagues hit the volleyball, basketball and pickleball courts inside the Laredo Athletic Complex. Colorful murals of Hispanic writers decorate Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library, just across McPherson Road. Vietnam Veterans Park is next to the library, where visitors might take a walk on the winding walking path or browse at the occasional pop-up food truck and vendor market. Lake Casa Blanca International State Park immerses hikers, mountain bikers, kayakers and anglers in the scenic brush country, roughly 5 miles from home.
Events at Joe A. Guerra Public Library, local churches
Beyond hosting regular story time and hobby club programs for kids and adults, Joe A. Guerra Public Library is also a hub for special events. Halloween decorations, movie nights, seasonal parties and craft events pop up throughout October. Writers look forward to the Annual Laredo Poetry Festival, submitting works that match each year’s theme for the chance to perform and publish their compositions. A few small churches, including Templo Buenas Nuevas, offer Spanish- and English-language religious services close to home.
Taking I-35 and El Metro buses around Laredo
Taking Interstate 35, downtown Laredo is about 3 miles from Calton Gardens. Laredo Medical Center, a major hospital and employer, is roughly 2 miles away. A handful of El Metro Transit bus routes serve Calton Road and the other main streets that frame the neighborhood. Laredo International Airport is about 5 miles from home. Residents living near Calton Gardens’ major highways and busy shopping districts may experience traffic noise.
